Poll question: Which American is the biggest failure as a human being?
Edited on Fri Nov-14-03 11:40 AM by elfwitch
Last night, as we were driving around, my husband and I were listening to the South Park movie soundtrack. As we were enjoying the Violent Femmes version of I Swear It (I Can Change), it started a conversation.

Most people can agree that Saddam Hussein was a miserable excuse for a human being. He lacked basic human compassion, dignity, and conscience.

The point of contention in the discussion is that there are an awful lot of people (right here in the good o'le USofA) that are just as big of failures in the human being department as he was. Granted, he did kill a lot of people. But who is to say that some of our homegrown inhuman monsters haven't at least indirectly caused many deaths as well.

So here is my question....
Who from this list do you feel is the biggest failure as a human being? (Meaning the one that most lacks the basic human qualities of compassion, dignity, and conscience.)

Feel free to discuss why you feel your pick shouldn't be able to qualify fur HUMAN status.

edit: I added GW to the list because of the demand. (Though I feel it was too obvious a choice) Democracy in action!

1. What an embarrassment of rich...er...embarrassments
I couldn't chose, so I selected other. Robert Bork. If you listened to his testimony in his confirmation hearings, you got the impression of a cold intellect utterly devoid of empathy or connection to human beings. Of women who had to agree to be sterilized to keep their jobs, he said, "I thought they'd be happy to have jobs." Of civil rights, "At the time I was working on a free market theory of racial relations and figured the problem would correct itself like markets do." :scared:

2. George W. Bush! Why is he not listed?
Born on third base, and thinks he hit a triple. The "compassionate conservative." "A uniter, not a divider." The worst president in American history. Doesn't read any newspapers. GAACK! He is obviously the choice - despite the other worthies listed.

6. Woulda been too easy...
I also kinda feel he is mostly evil be reflection. If he had just stayed inside the bottle or kept a vial of coke up his nose, he would have only been a threat to himself all his life. I kinda feel like he is propped up evil. He is still a real dirtbag, don't get me wrong. I just think the others on the list are evil on purpose.

People who mislead in the name of religion are terrible. I didn't even think of Rev. Phelps. I would have chosen him over Falwell. I live in KS so I tend to block him from my mind whenever possible.

20. They're all worthy candidates, but I have to go
with Falwell. Although I'm not a Christan, I've seen Christians accomplish a lot of good in the world when they truly love and care about others. Falwell uses Christianity (or rather, his version of it) to divide people instead of unite them.

22. Grover Norquist
He's just plain evil. He's the real puppet master, I think, even more so than Rove. Rove is the operative, but Norquist is the strategist. And I've never seen or heard anything from him that isn't repellent and frightening and offensive in terms of what I think it means to be an American.

24. Jeffrey Dahmer
As a relative of one of the unfortunate individuals in the Donner party that was eaten, perhaps my personal bias is showing.

Given the choice to have dinner with Dahmer or Bush, I would choose Bush, so that I could be sure that I wasn't dinner, and would have some idea of how to articulate my rage.

But in outright snuffing people out and erasing their name, Stalin was king

http://www.deanesmay.com/archives/001246.html
(snip)
The Soviets, always more technologically primitive, made less effort to clean up the mess wrought by their genocides. They were not completely unfastidious, however. In the 1930s, the Soviet government printed up signs in the affected parts of the Soviet Union, letting citizens know that eating their own children was an act of barbarism. They also did their best to crack down on the practice of cannibalizing corpses stolen from mass graves and hospitals by people who otherwise had nothing at all to eat. (The New York Times was on hand to report but, unfortunately, their correspondent was friendly to Stalin's regime.)

After Hitler, the genocides of the 20th century continued in a stunning number of places. Ho Chi Minh, Idi Amin, Pol Pot, and others killed hundreds of thousands or millions. The greatest mass murderer in human history, Mao of China, killed fully 65 million souls in his many pograms.
Stop and think about that some time. One man killed 65 million people. Go watch Schindler's List. It's a truly amazing movie, an important movie that everyone should see. Then think: Mao killed more than ten times as many Chinese as Hitler killed Jews.

Try to wrap your mind around that. You can't, can you? It becomes simply a number. A numbing, appalling number of wives, grandmothers, daughters, fathers, grandfathers, sons--all ages, all groups, it didn't matter. You were a problem for the regime, and then you were gone.

We think of the Nazis when we think of genocide. Well, why shouldn't we? They were as evil as evil can get, and they were efficient at documenting their crimes. Proud of them, even. They should always be remembered as a unique evil, and the specter of their philosophy should always be feared.
(snip)

ON edit: Yea I know Stalin was no American, but that dude didn't have too many equals, so I thought someone should bring it up. If you go to that site, be carefull, because there are lots yucky pictures even for black and white photography

This guy has probably the most unfortunate genetic makeup of anyone I can think of. To be so intelligent and so stupid at the same time should be genetically impossible, but he made it. An abborration for sure.
