Clark's First Televised Ad to Highlight War Record
Edited on Sat Nov-15-03 12:40 AM by pruner
By JIM RUTENBERG

Published: November 15, 2003

Gen. Wesley K. Clark's campaign is set to broadcast the first of its television advertisements on Tuesday with a minute-long spot that highlights his combat record and his term as the NATO supreme allied commander.

The spot effectively amounts to a television debut for General Clark — the last of the front-running Democratic presidential candidates to hit the airwaves — and emphasizes his main campaign theme: that he is the most qualified to be commander in chief.

With this commercial the retired general enters an intensifying political advertising climate whose volume went up another notch yesterday with a tough advertisement from Senator Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut that takes on former Gov. Howard Dean of Vermont and, to a lesser extent, Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts.

General Clark's commercial is similar to the earlier ones of his opponents in its biographical approach. But it is perhaps the most provocative of its type this season, with an opening reminiscent of "Saving Private Ryan."

3. Sounds like a good first ad to me
It introduces him to the American public as having served vs AWOL, I have no doubt that the following ads will focus on his proposed policies on healthcare, etc.

6. Yeah, a first biographical ad is okay ...
... but he needs to quickly shift to what he would do for the country. Being a hero unfortunately didn't help McCain or Cleland.

11. Good!
That means we'll get to see Wes Clark in uniform.....I think that is a great approach. Then we can contrast and compare with Bush wearing his teeny little flight suit!
