"Bush hatred". . .
gets 3390 hits on Google. But if you scroll through the first 100 or so of the first hits, you discover that they aren’t sites belonging to people who hate Bush, or articles written by people who hate Bush. They are sites/articles tut-tutting and deploring this vague and (according to Google) pretty much non-existent group of people who actively and overtly “hate” Bush.

This is the meme, folks. They’ve been spreading it for months and it’s going to be the theme for ‘pubs in 2004. Just watch how often that phrase pops up on Fox and it gets picked up by the others. It’s gonna be all about poor, poor, trying-so-hard Bush and those angry, mean Dems. It’s a red-faced, wild-eyed, frothing at the mouth Howard Dean who’s hatred of Bush makes him liable to blow a gasket and push the nuclear button if we don’t stop him. It’s Nicholas Kristof wanting us to roll over and wait to have our belly scratched by the Republicans rather than appear like we’re vindictive. It’s David Brooks doling out advice to Dems (ha!) about how the only way to win is by playing nice and not appearing to be too partisan.

Well, guess what? We’ve tried playing nice and a lot of Dems supported and stood behind Bush in the war on terrorism. And every single one has paid. In the 2002 elections, did it stop Rove and Co. from going after each and every Dem? Did it make any difference to Max Cleland or Mary Landrieu that they “supported” Bush. Hell, NO. Their attempts at bi-partisanship were repaid with a swift kick in the ass. Gee, I don’t remember any articles about how shoddy it was to do that, do you? I don’t remember any editorials bemoaning “Dem hatred”, do you?

If nothing else, whether you like him or not (I do) Howard Dean was the first one to recognize that appeasement doesn’t work with this crowd. Things are getting nasty and I for one do not want to read one more article or editorial that suggests that it’s up to US to somehow set the tone and be above it all. Been there, done that, have an impeachment and a stolen election and a lot of good people out of office to show for it.

This is one Dem who ain’t gonna settle for a belly scratch any more.

1. I don't let anyone control the terms of a political discussion anymore.
Edited on Sat Nov-15-03 03:13 AM by Old and In the Way
I find myself challenging every "fact" and phrase that a person will make in conversations about politics. I never used to. But we cannot let bogus assumptions and false memes stand and take hold.

I've learned a lot on the DU and it's great to have a site where the truth still shines.

Now if you want to see real RW hatred in print....check this thread out:

3. Nice post
Look for Sully, Lowry and other repug liars to start columns with "A quick google search with the words 'Bush Hatred' came up with pages upon pages of links for liberals who hate Bush and the America he is protecting from the evil-doers to click on..."

Yep. I fully expect these hypocrites to use this very soon.

:boring:

4. Liberals are counted upon to act responsibly.
The press by and large ignored Bush when he decided to give federal campaign financing a pass in 2000. When Dean made the decision this month, he was excoriated for driving a stake through the heart of public financing and finance reform. A mercy killing, in my view, but regardless: clearly, he was expected to behave better than Bush. It's as though we're supposed to be nurturing a group of heavily armed 50-ish adolescents. It's insane.

Al Giordano has a good little rant going on public campaign funding. I think he nails it.

7. Bravo! But for your stance, the statists will attack you
as they attack Dean, for the most nonsense, bullshit issues imaginable. The statist is more put off by backbone then they are by the Bush Reign of Horror, if you can believe it.

For what it's worth, Democrat appeasement is what forced me to leave the party some time ago. I wonder if, like rekindling a long lost love, I can see my way back with the Dean revolution? Stay tuned.

8. I agree. "Bush haters" are a big theme for the GOP.
They will use it to tar Dean and to evade responsibility for Bush's failure to unite the country and change the tone in Washington.

Bush failed, but the GOP doesn't want the tree judged by its fruits.
