Just looking over some old CNN articles
I did a search of CNN for "the next US president" and came across this article from Nov. 16, 2000.

http://www.cnn.com/2000/ALLPOLITICS/stories/11/16/election.president.reut/

That's after the people of Florida voted for Gore but before the Supreme Court gave it to Bush. Anyway, it talks about what the "next president" will have to do in order to be accepted by the country. Two parts standout to me.

1) He is likely to move swiftly to reach out to the loser and his supporters, they said, perhaps by awarding them an early policy victory or appointing multiple cabinet ministers from the other party.

2) Baker said either candidate would sidestep early battles and might grant the other side a policy victory or two in hopes of keeping the partisan fighting to a minimum at the start.
Major achievements, like approval of Bush's huge tax-cut package or Gore's health care reform plans, will be out of the question after the disputed election, he said. Some smaller, incremental progress on issues might be possible, however.

Why do I find this interesting? First, does anyone recall Bush reaching out to the Dems or offering any cabinet positions to them? Also, what policy victory did he give the Dems? Second, I think this article is just another example of how often people in the media are wrong about politics. These are the same folks who say that a Dem cannot beat Bush. They were wrong in 2000 and they are wrong again now.

Just felt like sharing. Hope you are all well and please make a donation to this fantastic site.

1. Thanks for the memories...
I recall back in late 2000 when we had the "fantasy" that since Bush lost the popular vote, barely won the electoral college, and that he didn't have a mandate, that he would govern as a centrist. What a "miserable failure" of a fantasy that was!

2. Well there was the much heralded "No Child Left Behind"
a Supposedly Bi-Partison (Ted Kennedy-Bush*) Bill that now Kennedy says is a farce. Good bill but no money allotted.
