18. This would be especially sweet for me.
I stumbled across CNN tonight and finally remembered that today was the election - and what do I hear, with 77% of precincts reporting, Blanco is at 51%! I can hardly believe it!

It'd be especially sweet for me because my parents (in New Orleans suburbs) have a Jindall sign in their front yard. Dad's scientifically-minded and very environmentally concerned, but he's been brainwashed about Democrats and blacks, taxes, and guns. He just won't get it.

Please please please let this be true! Let her win!!!

33. oh you know...
Jindall is very good for the environment because he once wrote a paper on coastal erosion, dontch know?

I actually heard this argument made by an intelligent man who should know better. Sigh.

Jindall is excellent at writing term papers and I think he would do well in academia but I don't see why we need him to hold a seat for Mike Foster's (lack of) action and ideas.

Although Blanco is also on the conservative side, I think she is a much more independent choice and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her. My impression of Jindall is that he is 32 year old "nerd" who cannot stand up to Mike Foster.

ferguson (dem) lost...
...a bitter, bitter, bitter fight there. Lots of mud-slinging. Ferguson seemed about 1000 times more qualified on the face of it and I'm not sure why she lost but her opponent certainly slung the mud and claimed all sorts of claims...

24. I guess McAuliffe
can keep his job now.

However, based on Blanco's win, what can we learn from it? I mean, it is quite significant I would say. If we can have more representation for women from the south, like Blanco and Landrieu, we might be able to break the Republican stranglehold on it (the south)

You don't keep a coach around if he loses every game except the last one. Louisiana's a banana republic, a political paradox... but,
the time may be right for politically able Democratic women to step up in the south. Good point.

96. Jindal's strong showing
also shows us that minorities can also compete well in the south. It's important for us to keep this in mind if the party wants to expand its base in non African American minority communities, especially Asian and Latino. Plus Jindal, being a loony right wing republican, is quite the exception. We have a large pool of talent to choose from.

Anyways this is definetely good news for the party. Loosing these gubernatorial races 0-4 woulda been horrible. Also, this shows some signs of life for democratic chances in atleast this one state next year (assuming we have a strong candidate).

w/ 40% of Orleans Parish left to go. St Tammany, GOP stonghold, is 85% reporting: 75/25 Jindal. Explains the late tightening, as it was Tammany coming in, I suspect. Hence looking good. Still wouldn't be surprised if it winds up closer to 2% margin rather than 4%.

82. Just came in...
27,683 Blanco, 24,835 Jindal. Phewww. No surprise there

And yes, Lousiana uses the name "parishes" for what everyone else calls "counties". The SoS website now has Blanco w/699,051 votes, with 111 precincts to go. So looks like she will break 700,000 votes. Most of the remaining precincts are from the Red Jefferson county, though, although there are a few from Orleans, so the 50K vote gap will probably shrink a bit..

74. Lookout folks... I think we have a recall provision.
And I wouldn't put it past them to dispute the results. (pull a woody)

84. She can be a big help in the south and nationally
It's been a while since there's been a high profile pro-life Democrat, especially a woman. I think she can really be important nationally to the party.

98. You bet...
Ray Nagin's lost so much credibility for endorsing Jindal in the first place, now that he lost the election Nagin really has a problem. I'd have to say that he's really dissapointed myself as well as several others.

93. WOW! We are not fried, died and laid to the side!!!!
I'm so tickled! I haven't been able to keep up on anything at all today. I'm even listening to the Guy James show after the fact. Figured it would help me keep my sanity.

But this news out of Louisiana has lifted my dead spirit like you wouldn't believe. Congrats to Louisiana, Blanco and all Dems! We are not fried, died and laid to the side. We're alive and kicking.

Coming on the heels of the great marathon where the Repubs made themselves look like spoiled brats and the Dems came up smelling like roses, I'm smiling from ear to ear and back again!
