Mary Landrieu for Vice President? |
|
Edited on Sat Nov-15-03 10:52 PM by CMT
Louisiana is making us proud again--just as it did after the 2002 elections with what appears to be a Democratic victory in the state (proving the polls wrong).
La. is one southern state which has lately been going against the GOP trend in the South. Maybe we should show our gratitude for this by putting a Louisianian on the ticket next year?
Senator Mary Landrieu is in her second term and is an accomplished politician and comes from a family of politicos--dad, Moon, was Mayor of New Orleons and served in the Carter Administration and her brother is the next Lt. Governor of La. She is Catholic and pro-choice and is attractive to boot.
She has demonstrated a ability to win votes in this state and has a strong following among the states significant African-American electorate.
Finally, isn't it about time that the Democratic party nominate someone other than another white male for vice president? Let's be the real party of the 21st Century by making this statement. Louisiana apparently has no trouble electing women to significant offices (US Senator, Governor). Finally, this is a great opportunity to take nine electoral votes away from George W. Bush.
p.s. and now we will have a democratic governor who would also name a democrat to her seat if she is elected VP!!

1. Tonight should prove once and for DAMN all... |

Louisiana is in play for 2004, and if a cute blonde like Landrieu is nominated as the VP, we have LA in the bag.
Later.

2. Don't we need her in the Senate? |
|
Seems to me that she'd continue to be an asset there - though conservative, at least she's a Democrat and often votes centrist.

16. We need the White House. Period. |
|
If we get it with Landrieu as VP, she still has a vote there. Also, it looks like a dem. governor (Blanco, leading Jindal 52-48 ) would be able to pick her successor. Potentially, the seat could even remain in the family with Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu getting appointed.

21. We now have Gov. Blanco |

Who will appoint a Democrat to replace Mary (probably either Lt. Gov.-elect Mitch Landrieu or Atty. Gen. Richard Ieyoub).

This is also a good sign for 2004 (if Breaux retires) that we can hold his seat. Though I still hope that Breaux stays in the Senate for another term.

I wouldn't gamble with a woman as a VP candidate. There is too much at stake. Play it smart - I think Clark is the best VP candidate.
We HAVE to have a P or VP with legitimate military experience. The reasons are obvious.

I think having a female VP would be a good choice for Clark. I think he can pull it off too. No one can spin having a female VP as being weak when it's balanced by a general.

33. He wouldn't be appointed by Mary, but by Blanco |

Therefore nepotism wouldn't be a problem (it would be the same as Lincoln Chafee being appointed to his dad's seat).

26. I think it's time we had a female VP |
|
I don't know if Landrieu is the best possibility, but I would love to have a female VP. It would help neutralize the possibility of Bush swapping Condi for Cheney. And having a female VP would make a good counterpoint to Clark's four stars.
Plus, her legislative experience is a definite plus that complements Clark well. Having someone who has legislative experience and is good at shepherding bills through congress works better for Clark than having a governor for a VP, since Clark already has executive governing experience in dealing with domestic issues at military bases.
And having a female VP helps make the contrast starker between the two parties if Cheney stays on the ticket. The novelty factor might win points in the press as well. And having a female on the ticket can't be spun as weak on national security (some have this image of women being weak, absolute nonsense) if you have a general at the top.

30. Wouldn't it depend on who got the nomination... |
|
If Clark or Kerry got it, then they would have the defense thing taken care of and could run with her. If Clark or Edwards got it, they would kind of need someone with the military background.
Defense will be an issue in the next election, whether we like it or not.

35. Putting a woman on the ticket is too risky this time |
|
Remember what happened to Mondale and Ferraro? Everyone was excited about how well they would do among women, but in the end they got creamed. They even lost the female vote!
Our nominee (and hopefully it's Howard Dean) would be much better off selecting someone like Wesley Clark, Bob Graham, or Evan Bayh. Mary Landrieu is still young and will have her shot at national office later on. But not in 2004.

not only for women but for people of color. It will be the same story every four years "it is too risky" and use the Mondale selection of Ferarro as proof. Ferarro didn't cost Fritz the '84 election--no democrat was going to beat Ronald Reagan in 1984.
