With Kathleen Blanco about to join their fold, who do you think is the best female governor (I am only counting current governors)

1. As a Buckeye fan, I will say something nice about Michigan
Jennifer Granholm is one hot, smart, Dem BABE!

Can we have her? Please? We own all the cities here, but we can't find any statewide candidates. HELP!

2. What about Marcy Kaptur or Sherrod Brown?
Try running one of them in 2006.

31. Yeah I knew that
I was just recommending good gubernatorial candidates.

If you only want female recommendations, I'd suggest Rep. Marcy Kaptur, Rep. Stephanie Tubbs-Jones, or Mary Boyle.

19. Ella Grasso
Elected in 1974 as the first woman Gov. to not succeed her husband into office, re-elected in '78 & 82 (I think) and passed away in office. I don't remember the reason, but no foul play.

She was the BOMB as gov. And she's just as funny in person speaking extemporaneously as she is on tv.

she just won, and has proved we're still competitive in the South.

10. Don't both Granholm and Blanco have questionable pro-choice records?
Edited on Sun Nov-16-03 12:29 AM by burr
I understand that both are pretty conservative on social issues and civil rights, but what about Roe vs. Wade?

Strange how they lead in this poll, is it just name recognition...or are most DUers really this far to the right?

11. I think Granholm is fine
I haven't heard anything to suggest that she has a qustionable position on abortion. Where did you hear that?

Blanco is completely pro-life. She is quite conservative and people are just excited about her so they are voting for her. Nobody here will like her very much in a few months.

I voted for Janet Napolitano. I think she is a good governor. She seems like someone to be looked at for VP in 2004 even though that might not work out. Minner seems good also. I don't know very much about Kathleen Sebelius, but I like Democrat that is elected from Kansas.

12. I know that Napolitano was a constitutional officer
But I don't know that (with only two years as governor), she'd be ready to be VP.

13. True
I think that she has some problems. Unfortunately, her somewhat masculine appearance could be an issue. She would almost certainly be mocked by people like Janet Reno was. That could hurt her. Also, she is single which is going to add to jokes by some people. That could be a problem that I wish wasn't but realistically is.

Guess what? Republicans tried to FILIBUSTER when Clinton nominated her to be U.S. Attorney for Arizona. Just another example of Republican hypocrisy.

16. I'm not sure, my source isn't exactly accurate...
it was some program with some right-wingers talking about Democrats they liked best. Zell was the favorite Senator, Hall was the favorite Congressman, but their was disagreement on the Governor. Some listed Granholm because she was a former Canadian, Catholic I think...who supported a ban on late-term abortions. Some picked the Tennessee Governor, but they were Republican callers. Another guest suggested that Ben Nelson should be the best Senator.

After a while I felt extremely sick and disgusted, and worried I might explode! So I turned off the TV and did some yardwork before it was over.

22. Granholm vetoed
a "partial birth" abortion ban. She explained that though she's Catholic and doesn't feel abortion is "right" it's not her decision to make.

And she definetely is a very intelligent, attricative woman.

And to the Ohioan, I can haha! Not only do we have two cool senators and governor, but UM will kick OSU's a$$ next week (or is it the week after?) ! ;-)

She'll be out of office by 2006 anyway (possibly replaced by Mazie Hirono, who could join this poll).

(Also, I missed putting Olene Walker (R-UT) on this poll).

20. Not Napolitano..... spends far too much time sucking up to the right....
My mum and gran live in AZ. She's not as great as she's cracked up to be. She and Lieberman would make a good pair for the Repugs.

Her "CNG-powered" initiative for vehicles is a joke and has put the state in to huge debt. One can write off most of the cost of a HUGE SUV and the cost of installing a 25# (the same size as a BBQ grill takes) can for CNG and get the whole package as a tax rebate AND get to use the HOV lanes....

And most of them run on their gasoline tanks most of the time..... grrrrrrrrrrr...... it was a give away to the right. (Phoenix has worse air than LA.)

Her water policies have been just as bad. There is no state initiative towards conservation, even when their major source (my home, Colorado!) is in a drought of centennial proportions... and we're robbing the great plains farmers of water to feed AZ desert golf courses......

On the environment, she's a twit. On social justice.... well, she has not curbed that slime, Joe Arpaio (the guy with the tents and the pink underwear who thinks tents in the desert and spoiled food are perfectly appropriate for people awaiting trial and too poor to make bail. (Innocent until proven, anyone?!?) She has not called for investigations at the maximum security prison of guards who abuse prisoners.

she's better than shrub.... but that's not saying much. C- at best.

29. Guys, why does everyone like Blanco? Today's WPost
reported that she is extremely conservative.

"Nonetheless, by most measures the two candidates are practically ideological soul mates, devout Catholics who oppose affirmative action, abortion, gun control and higher taxes while embracing steps to improve schools, health care and the state's anemic economy. "
