Can Louisiana be re-redistricted now? |
|
Now that Democrats control the governorship and the legislature of Louisiana it's time to ask if the state's congressional districts be be reredistrcited. The 5th District could be shored up a bit for freshmann Rodney Alexander (D) and made a bit more Democratic. Bill Jefferson in the 2nd does not need a 64% black district. I say slice of 10% of that and put it in the 3rd district, which is being held by Billy Tauzin, who is likely going to be leaving Congress to be the new MPAA president. Then chop off the Republican parts of the 5th and the 3rd and move them to the 6th District, held by (R) Richard Baker, and then move some of the Republican parts of the 3rd into the heavily Republican 1st District (R-Vitter) and Jefferson's heavily Democratic District (the 2nd).

The reason that the courts are letting Texas and Colorado re-redestrict is because the previous plans were court ordered and the courts have ruled that the slate legislature can put in a new plan. However, Louisiana already has a legislature-approved plan so they may very well not be allowed to redistrict it again. I just don't think that we will be allowed to do it.
