Netguide Awards: Scoop Wins Highly Commended Best News Service

Scoop has risen to number two Best News Site in New Zealand by winning the highly commended award in the Best News Service category at New Zealand’s Netguide Awards in Auckland. Scoop’s win is a clear endorsement for concise news and persuasive commentary that advocates public interest ideals in an independent news environment with attitude.

Netguide said: “Public opinion: No one tells it like Scoop does, truthful, political, comprehensive and delivered by email.”

HIGHLY COMMENDED: www.scoop.co.nz

Netguide’s category description for Best News Service (sponsored by Red Sheriff) said: “The shape of news media has changed, and is changing still with the advent of the Net. We are looking for news sites that utilise the immediacy and technology of the Web to cover the latest breaking news stories, whilst also being easy to follow at a glance.”

Winner of the Best News Service was Stuff.co.nz owned by Australasian media giant Fairfax. Netguide said of Stuff: “Public opinion: All the latest news from any locality in New Zealand – easy to use, colourful and great coverage.”

Netguide said there were 77 New Zealand news websites entered in this year’s awards.

The Best News Service finalists were: www.ruralnews.co.nz, www.nzoom.com, www.newstalkzb.co.nz, www.nzherald.co.nz, www.xtramsn.co.nz.

6. Hey!!! - Thanks bev :)

And welcome back again bev!!!! As the 80+ in that other thread said... we missed you. Heaps...

The award is a bit of a buzz indeed. And a fair bit of the credit is probably due to Bev. At the awards BBV was the thing everybody wanted to talk about.

As one tech-monkey explained in the early hours over a beer. "Here is a news story that I can really understand", he had downloaded the original files and had a good poke around.

The first really satisfying thing about this award is that was a public voting driven award.... no money politics involved.

Plus to give you a bit of background nearly all our fellow finalists (barring one) are all huge mult-million dollar media empires.

- xtramsn is our version of MSNBC (though kinda crap) run by a combination of our telecommunications monopoly and M$oft
- nzoom.com is the website of our state broadcaster Television NZ .. sort of a mini bbc.co.uk
-nzherald.co.nz is the countries biggest newspaper's site so sort of NZ's NYT.com
& newstalkzb.co.nz is the website of the countries top rating radio show sort of like foxnews or sommat.

Admittedly RuralNews.co.nz is a small independent mind.... but the rest of em all have buckets of cash and huge content generation apparatuses behind them.

And then there is our fellow winner Stuff.co.nz, also part of media empire until recently Rupert Murdoch's - he sold out this year to Australia's Fairfax.

Well they won and we got second, so all credit to em... but it is worth noting that two ex scoop staff work there on their relatively small core editorial team of 5 so methinks perhaps that had something to do with it :)

10. Alastair (Althecat) what would we have done without you???
You are the one who has pushed the BBV problem to the fore! God Bless You (and Bev). The two of you have made the problem so concise and blatant, that those of us who have followed and watched with our mouths dropped open have decided to do something about this travesty of justice. You have recruited more soldiers to the cause than you would ever have imagined! God Bless You Both!
