Great Article on Clark
U.S. must catch Saddam — and soon, Clark says
By Susan Page, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — Retired general Wesley Clark warned Sunday that the failure to capture Saddam Hussein was likely to undermine any new Iraqi government. And he said it was important to capture Saddam alive so he could be tried for war crimes.

Clark's comments, at a session with USA TODAY and Gannett News Service reporters and editors, came as the Bush administration was accelerating the turnover of civilian authority to Iraqis. Clark praised the decision as a move "in the right direction" but said no regime was likely to succeed if Saddam stayed on the lam.

"It's going to be very hard for the United States to turn the problem over to the Iraqis if Saddam is still there as the, we might say, illegitimate ruler," said Clark, a Democratic presidential contender. "It's going to make it very hard for an Iraqi government to survive." The Bush administration, under fire for a growing toll of U.S. casualties, agreed this weekend to turn over political control by July 1, regardless of Saddam's whereabouts.

Clark said it was important to catch him alive: "I would hate to see us bust into a bunker and not be able to bring him out alive to stand trial. One of the things you really want to establish is rule of law. It's the essence of peacekeeping and stability operations."

1. Oh, bullshit. The article is not "great," it's stupid.
And the whole idea of jumping around to catch and kill official US enemies is stupid, too. I could think of many things far more worth doing than that. The less of this kind of bullshit talk, the better.

6. Step away from the keyboard.
OK, I admit it's not a "great" article, but you don't think we need to deal with Saddam? Wouldn't you prefer him in court than missing? We are in Iraq now and we have to deal with it. I think capturing Saddam would be a good thing.

2. Does Clark know where Saddam and Osama are?
Edited on Sun Nov-16-03 10:49 PM by billbuckhead
Does he know that the Bush misadministration can't produce them? Why set up a task for the Bushies that they may accomplish? Is this a gamble by Clark or does he have inside info? I forgot, he did say Osama was in Pakistan. Kerry was saying bin Ladin was let go, flown out along with a bunch of Pakistani intelligence who were with the Taliban.

3. Probably not
Maybe I'm biased, but perhaps he might be suggesting this as the proper course of action, because he actually believes that it's the right thing to do.

5. The General is a compassionate man.
The more he says and the more he does, the more I like him.

<snip>At one point, tears welled in his eyes as he leafed through a book of photographs he had brought of the conflict in Kosovo. He displayed pictures of a Serb soldier kicking a woman lying on the street and of a 5-day-old baby who had died of exposure in the mountains, where her family had fled.

"This is the pornography of violence," he said. He noted that the United States didn't act to stop a bloody civil war in Rwanda. "We dillied and we dallied," he said. "I said I never would let something like that happen again."<snip>

He's not running for president for the fun of it. He's not running for the power or recognition. He's running out of a sense of obligation and duty. He needs to save our country from the likes of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz. He knows what they're doing. PNAC?

Thanks for the article.
