AP: Dean is developing Hoosier following – among Dems & Repubs alike
Moral, financial support are building for 2004 Democratic presidential candidate.

Associated Press
November 17, 2003

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean's campaign is winning him some fans among Indiana voters -- Democrats and Republicans alike -- intrigued by his message and grass-roots campaign.

<snip>

And many Dean supporters are political newcomers.

At a meeting of Dean supporters in Fort Wayne earlier this month, 30 of the 45 people who were there had not previously been involved in the Democratic Party, said Dennis Tropp, the chairman of the 3rd District Democratic Party, who has been a political activist for 30 years.

"I have never seen this early on that many people that involved with a presidential candidate," he said.

<snip>

Dean also has surged financially in Indiana as the other Democrats have sputtered.

Of the $131,483 that Hoosiers donated to the nine Democratic contenders, Dean's portion was almost half, and it was nearly twice as much as the next most prolific fund-raiser, Rep. Dick Gephardt of Missouri.

3. Great!
All Dean needs to do is pick Evan Bayh for VP and we'll have Indiana (and probably Ohio) in the bag. Dean/Bayh 2004!

Watch this get buried with an onslaught of "Dean is too angry" or another Former-Dean-supporter-fesses-up-to-pledging-to-Clark-and-seeing-the-light
posts.

5. Dean needs to put ads in states like IN
I am so sick of the media calling Dean a liberal - yes he has some liberal ideas, but he has plans for rural America, jobs, healthcare, etc that will help build a bigger stronger Dem party. In the ads Dean needs to address the media calling him liberal.

10. He's "liberal" where it counts most
(civil rights, health care, environment) and "centrist" otherwise IMO.

Its hard to define what is "liberal" and what is "conservative" these days, but I think we are headed into a long period of economic decline and big deficit spending (like Bush likes) will have to be controlled.

It's hard to think of jobs being considered "liberal", so I would say that's just plain common sense (Bush doesn't have any).

The Republicans are trying to pin the liberal tag on Dean and "liberal" Democrats are saying he's not a liberal. So, he is a "centrist". But, I'd rather have a "centrist" who doesn't start wars in the mideast for no good reason, but focuses on creating a sustainable economy. renewable energy, health care and jobs.

Howard Dean supporters organize in Cheyenne

<snip>
CHEYENNE, Wyo. - A Howard Dean supporter has begun organizing regular meetings to discuss the former Vermont governor's campaign.

Janet Whitehead's group took part in a nationwide conference call Saturday - Dean's 55th birthday - with other Dean supporters. About 5,700 took part at more than 330 house parties.

11. I had to drop out of doing Dean work due to my Truthout work
Edited on Mon Nov-17-03 09:50 AM by khephra
But along with several DUers here, we helped get Hoosiers For Dean off the ground. It's good to see that they're doing great! I wish I could have helped more, but it's too hard to hold a full-time political job and be a campaign organizer...especially when you can't drive to events.

12. kick ... and kudo's Kef for all the hard work ...
Hat's off to the IN Du'ers & HFD'ers (you know who you are) who have helped get a DEM on the Presidential campaign map !!

We actually thought for awhile that the Dean camp would forego setting up an office anywhere in IN because the state is traditionally considered so GOP.

Hoosier Dems have their work cut out for 'em, and I give the lot of ya' a big round of applause ...

Which I couldn't have done without you, sweetheart!

Hats off to all the other Indy DUers who played a part, however large or small, in getting Dean established in Indiana.

:loveya:

HUGS!
