What would the heroes of the civil rights movement say about...
Edited on Mon Nov-17-03 03:06 AM by _Jumper_
...tepid support for equal rights for homosexuals among Democrats today?

"We must get out of the shadow of states' rights and move into the broad sunshine of human rights!"=Hubery Humphrey 1948

1. Why do you ask?
I bet they would be for it. I wonder what the heroes of the democratic party would say about how the party is becoming  I admit I am far left on social, economic, and foriegn issues so help me god!

2. Well, they were from a very different era
So some might think they would oppose it. I believe that when they saw the arguments for and against it their predisposition to fighting for equality would lead the vast majority of them to join the right side.

3. What are you referring to when you say "tepid" support?
And I don't quite understand the uncertainty of your question. Many heroes of the civil rights movement are still alive. And making their voices heard.

7. _Jumper_, since you never responded to my question...
...about "tepid" Dem support of gay rights, perhaps you might want to take a look at the Human Rights Campaign's candidate scorecards.

All the Dem candidates with congressional voting histories score excellent or passing grades (Edwards's 106th Congress score of 71 is lowest; he improved during the next Congress). In fact, three of the candidates have perfect 100 percent scores for every Congress in which they've served.

4. Can you please clarify...
...what it is you actually mean?

I am asking for clarity so I don't see your post as being flamebait or homophobic.

6. Clarification
Liberals pay lip service to equal rights for homosexuals but there is no major push for equal rights for them. Would people like MLK, Humphrey, LBJ, RFK, Marshall, et al. who fought for racial civil rights be dissapointed in us if they saw our collective tepid support for equality for homosexuals?

I am absolutely not homophobic. I am a hetreosexual but I support absolute equality for GLBT people. I do not believe in civil unions; I believe we need to fight for homosexual marriage. Civil unions are a second-class classification IMO.

5. Coretta Scott King
wife of the Good Doctor, is an ardent proponent of GLBT rights. Although Dr. King was somewhat silent about it, I feel fairly confident that he would approve of GLBT rights today. Some of his good friends were homosexuals as well.
