First casualty in Ariel Sharon graft case

JERUSALEM - A lawyer working for the Israeli state prosecutor's office has been suspended over press leaks concerning a corruption probe involving the family of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, press reports said today.

Anat Savidor-Goldensweig, the suspended lawyer, was in charge of an inquiry into bribes allegedly paid to Sharon's second son Gilad by Israeli contractor David Appel to promote a multi-million dollar Greek resort in 1990.

The lawyer, daughter of Menahem Savidor - former Knesset president and a major figure in Sharon's right-wing Likud party - is suspected of having given a journalist from the Yerushalayim newspaper information to show that no serious charge was being levelled at the prime minister over the affair, the Yediot Aharanot and Maariv dailies reported.
