I wasn't going to post this: in fact, I sent another version of it somewhere else, but the infighting reached my nausea limit, and I had to put this out there:
People, we are going to guarantee the "election" of George W. Bush, and I am getting sick and tired of people supposedly on our side helping to make it happen through acts of mutual and self mutilation.
I am not talking about the petty sniping that's going on between supporters: I think we've all proved what incredibly partisan fools we can be inside of our own milieu. This appears to be the nature of the beast, and I've stopped trying to change that.
I am talking about the misreading of the American Electorate. They don't have our concerns, they can't think past two candidates and they are not listening anyone's rhetoric past the sound bites. Therefore, it goes without saying that we are going down to defeat if we don't change the scenario. Now.
PART ONE Here in the hinterlands, all you have to do is read the local papers, and it all becomes clear as crystal:
"I trust the President." "Bush has restored our moral compass." "George Bush always tells the truth."
This is becoming more common with time, and if we deny it, we are whistling in the dark. Joe Bag-O-Donuts actually believes the propaganda; and if you remember the statistics, for every letter written, you can count on 20 that believe that way but didn't bother to write.
Here in Port Huron, Michigan, the homeless rate is beginning to skyrocket, and yet, these letters keep flying in. Why do these people, whose jobs have gone to Korea, Mexico, and Indonesia still support this guy? Because Radio, TV and the Papers tell them to.
Michelle Malkin is given at least one mid-page banner opinion space every week in the local rag, usually two, and sometimes three. Michael Reagan is there once or twice a week as well. Tie that to the "Community Columnists" (one, a retired economist for Ford Motor who thinks Reagan was GOD, and another, a buzz cut teenage member of the Young Republicans at one of the upscale high schools)….Well, you get my drift.
The upshot of this is the normal outgrowth of the voter's tendancy to go for what is comfortable. They don't understand enough to dig through our concerns and although they are frightened enough to care, the Right Wing is doing its best to assure them that Uncle George will take care of everything if we let him. This is difficult to fight with issues, if we ever really got to them, that is.
Maybe we can't do a lot about PART ONE, but we sure do something about PART TWO:
Our Candidates are going nowhere. All of them.
They started too late like Clark did and can't seem to catch fire: he's starting to fight back, but why the kid gloves? Or they don't stand a chance, like Sharpton or Kucinich or Moseley-Braun: I'm sorry, they just won't make it, no matter how wonderful someone thinks they are. Gephardt has Iowa and nowhere else. Kerry is a nice guy but his campaign is talking in a whisper, plus the money is going to start coming from his family; that hasn't worked yet. Is Edwards still running? I haven't heard his name even mentioned lately. Lieberman? Get real. And I swear to God if our current "Front Runner" (Dean) doesn't roll his sleeves down, quit mumbling to himself in the debates, and stop being the lightning rod for any electricity the Bush Campaign cares to loose, I will consider going to his next rally to give him a wake-up slap in the face. That man has shoes almost as clean as Bush from sticking his foot in his mouth.
What is up with these guys? Don't they hire Spin Doctors and PR Hacks? None of this should be happening in the first place, and the result of this is the entire Party selection process is starting to look like "Send in the clowns" with Karl Rove as the Ringmaster. I don't dislike any one of them with the exception of Lieberman, but for crying out loud, they all need to stop doing the RNC's job for them!
Also, if I hear one more time about how the incredibly wasteful in time, money and other resources "Primaries" will sort things out, I swear I will projective vomit on the shirt of the perpetrator. Waiting until then is starting the game at the second half, and spotting the opposition two touchdowns, then letting them receive the kick. Bush already has enough money to spend on the election to make Midas weep with envy, and he won't have to spend a nickel on primaries.
Kids, we have no more time for these arguments. You can complain all day long about this guy or that guy doesn't represent you or won't do all you want; tough. I'm a Socialist: take a wild guess how I feel about all of the candidates.
What it comes down to is this: you can have thin soup and bread for lunch with the Democrat of "not my choice" running things, or a feces sandwich on moldy toast with Bush in charge. We let this happen. We did. Clinton and Gore did not get our best efforts: we were busy with our 401k's and riding the prosperity tide. "Eternal Vigilance is the price of freedom," and we were asleep at the switch, the worst part being that we did it twice: 2000 and 2002. There is precious little time to stop the juggernaut of the Bush Administration no matter how much we believe differently on a personal level, and if we keep fighting among ourselves long enough, then there won't be any chance at all.
This horserace started a long time ago, and if it were not for the fact that the animal we are racing against is a blind Texas plow pony with one lame leg, the race would already be over. Time to saddle up one horse and start racing: pick one.
