Hmmm Nobody mentioning the big dem WIN in La.
I guess dumping on Howard Dean is more important.
Same group pretty much conceeded to Jindal last week too.

Party on, Garth.

2. There was a big thread here about it
on Sunday.

Blanco's victory shows how wrong polls can sometimes be; the polls had her losing by about 10 points, but she won by about 4 points. I can only assume that Democrats came out in force. I hope we do the same thing in November 2004.

18. Just shows to go ya
Louisianians are stubborn; we think we should elect our Gov, not the polls. I honestly think they inflated the polls to try to give Jindal the edge. Didn't work.

3. I wondered about that too
Does it go against the Dems are dead in the South mantra? Very fishy--and it was a WOMAN TOO!

5. Mmm hmmm
Exactly why we shoud write off the South, instead of trying to reach out to them, like Gov. Dean wants to... /sarcasm off

6. Maybe because Bush got 52.6% of the vote in La. in 2000?
You think he can do better than Gore there?... http://presidentelect.org/e2000.html

15. I think Dean can take Louisiana.
So can Clark. Or Edwads. Maybe even Kerry.

W was conspicuously absent from this Gubernatorial campaign. He stumped here for suzy terrel to no avail, so for whatever reason he didn't show up for Jindal at all.

W's not popular here. Dean could take Louisiana.

23. I'm still a registered pug, though I haven't voted that way in years
I got a call from George Bush on election day. He was in evidence that day trying to get out the pug vote. I hung up. Interestingly enough, I also got a call from Blanco. Of course, I have voted for her consistently over the 20 years we have lived in La., but I'm still not a registered dem. I'm just lazy. I do like knowing what they are up to, though.

26. SO, shrub was on the automated message to registered repubs, eh?
Pretty sneaky, sis... Reach out to the repubs without actually showing up and mobilizing the pissed off Democratic base. Not bad.

I was also a "stealth Dem" for more than ten years but I finally wrote my registrar's office when I got totally pissed off this past February with regard to the foreign policy. I wanted to let the repubs know I'm not on their side anymore.

Cheers, we live in a blue state, juajen. :toast:

21. Bush is disappointing a lot of the people who voted for him
here in Louisiana. I know in my small circle about 15 bushies that are not voting for him again. This state could very well go democratic in 2004.

19. Yes, a woman
But, she is a lady; stubborn, generous, smart. She's been in politics for over 20 years; she's never lost an election and she is always underestimated. Go Kathleen. Honestly, a lot of us really love her. It's a proud day in Louisiana. Mary Landrieu helped a lot and her little brother, Mitch, is Kathleen's Lt. Governor. Oh, happy day!

7. Blanco should remember her real constituents
Like Mary Landrieu in 1996, Blanco profited from high voter turnout in New Orleans (Orleans Parish), while Metairie and other white-flight suburbs in Jefferson Parish continue to produce Repuke voters. Blanco should be aware of who her real constituents are, i.e. the African American voters of New Orleans, and she should NOT try to pander to those who didn't even vote for her in the first place. Mary Landrieu almost forgot that lesson, but she thankfully remembered it in time to defeat Suzanne Terrell last December. Louisiana is a strange state, and it has its share of rednecks/Republicans, but by the same token, it's a populist state as well, and automatically putting Louisiana in the Republican column would be a mistake. National Democrats definitely have a chance there; just look at Clinton's win there in 1992.

10. Putting LA, AR, TN or KY in the 'R' column automaticallly is a mistake.
All 4 states have strong populist tendencies with substantial Democratic bases.

They aren't Diebold machines, though. Still, no paper.

22. On NPR this morning they basically dismissed the win....
claiming Louisiana as a "highly-Democratic state" so "no big-win anyway." On the same note, they claimed this win would have little affect on the Democratic candidate's chances in Louisiana in 2004. (Hold on there...I thought you just said LA is a highly Democratic state!!) Also, they said this only succeeded in not being another GOP "claim of major victory," so as to not make Democrats look even weaker.

Whatever! And who says NPR has liberal bias?

27. The Washington Compost hid it inside the first section.
Since they were hooked on the phrase "popular wartime president" for close to a year, and they no longer have Colman McCarthy or (sob) Mary McGrory providing regular columns, I guess they want to keep the egg on their face as hidden as possible. Louisiana electing a Democrat (and a woman, no less) just doesn't fit into the We Want Our White Conservative Male Leader mantra. Famous last words...
