Frontline Tonight: Dangerous Prescription |
|
An investigation follows the FDA's approval process and examines the role drug companies play in the approval and monitoring of prescription medicines."I think it was pretty well understood," say former FDA scientist Michael Elashoff, "that if you were advocating turning a drug down -- particularly if it was from a large pharmaceutical company -- that that wouldn't be good for your career." A drug reviewer for the FDA from 1995 to 2000, Elashoff says he was marginalized within the agency after he voiced his concerns about a new flu drug called Relenza. Here, Elashoff speaks out about the culture of the FDA's drug approval process.http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/prescription/*catch it here on media player* http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/prescription/view/Should make for an interesting show?!

The most striking quote was "The United States does not have a drug safety system".... YIKES!
I was surprised to learn that when meds are issued, safety is monitored 'after the fact' SUPER! Additionally it's often up to the drug companies to act as watch dogs for their own products HUH???
*I always ask for a drug that's been around a while, call it "healthy caution"*
