8. You only have to be fifty.

When I turned five-oh, my Pater bought me a membership. I was pissed (I'm a river guy -- been living on De Nile for years) and let it lapse but, a decade further on, got my own membership mainly for the health insurance possibilities.

Oh, right, and -- they should represent all the members, not just those who fuck.

2. That's extremely heartening
If they keep up the pressure, maybe AARP will recant its two ridiculous stances and actually represent its fucking members.

Pardon my language, but this is really calling for some harsh invectives.

7. You don't bother me. I got really awful to them today.
And my husband yelled an invective across the room. The lady said did he say what I think he said? I said he did for sure.

3. "AARP" endorsed bush's medicare?
What are they thinking? Do they think it would really benefit seniors? I belong to AARP and get my car insurance through them but I don't buy into anything else they do.

5. They have a lot of insurance available for seniors.
My mother had great medigap insurance through them. However I think they are just doing the bidding of their corporate masters now.
It is a sin to do this to people.

18. My husband still has their MediGap and
they have been a life saver, but I don't know about this new front they are presenting. The old AARP didn't capitulate and fold like this. I am very suspicious as to whom is running the show now especially after this little Monday surprise.

6. AARP is also tenatively endorsing the privatization of Social Security
The New Deal is coming to a close.

9. maybe AARP has been infiltrated like so many organizations
The neo-cons are PNACing eveything right? Why wouldn't they make a move to infiltrate every organization. Like AARP.

24. They have always been about big business and the money. Medi gap?
Has anyone analyzed the cost benefit? Compared to what? My father had this and he was shafted...the cost we could have banked for two years and paid our own medical expenses with money left over.

and that name was already used so I had to go as zidzi1. When I get my confirmation I will register my complaint for their endorsing bush on anything.

11. The day I turned 50 (last year) AARP came calling.
As the mom of a 10 year old (my one and only) I'm nowhere near ready to relate - and can't fathom why they are so anxious to sign up the baby boomers other than for the obvious monetary reasons. They ought to get a clue that 50 isn't what is was even a generation ago.

That said, my 80 year old parents quit AARP a while back when they caught a distinct repuke odor whafting from the organization. Seniors are incredibly well informed about issues relating to Medicare and Social Security and have the time to write letters and make phone calls. AARP blundered big time here.

17. ROFL! They came after me when I turned 35! Seriously.....I think they
must have changed their policy since then if you didn't hear from them until 50! I thought it was a mistake but every years since then (and there have been years since then) they send me a notice with an AARP Membership card included! I was insulted and have never joined, but mostly because I have a "thing" about age...and I'm not retired, but could be given this economy if I wasn't an "independent contractor," where I might have wanted to belong to something like that.

It's defintely a "sell out" though. My father who is in his 90's said the organization was suspicious and never joined.....maybe I picked it up from him....but I'm sad to see this because they at least were a PAC voice for those who were concerned about having a voice for retirement even if they weren't yet retired.

Cancelling the subscription might set them "on their ear." And, if one buys "supplemental insurance" I would think you could still do that without belonging to AARP.

Supporting the plans - and even the re-election - of George Bush is like leaving a large, untrained puppy alone in the house for several days: Serious damage can result. Bush is so clueless he's even damaged himself. This is a pity - he might have done some good, but instead he listened to very bad, "bought-and-paid-for" advisors - and acted upon their advice. The cost is immense! We cannot replace the human lives his decisions have lost, nor will this country recover any time in the foreseeable future from his bankrupt fiscal and social "policies."

I kinda like those old folks

Or this one - with mention of DU!

What is AARP getting out of this in the form of kickbacks or tradeoffs from drug companies? There's got to be an angle. There is no explanation for the capitulation to this administration, which has never demonstrated itself to be on the side of individuals when a corporation is at hand to be serviced.

I'm going to cancel my membership. For lots more information, go to democraticunderground.com. They've got the skinny.

25. AARP Insurance
Anyone considering AARP Insurance should do comparative shopping. I assumed that being a senior citizen and a member of AARP, I would be able to reduce my costs for automobile, home, and medical by obtaining the AARP insurance - the assumption that with millions of seniors utilizing AARP my costs would be manageable. After comparing my existing costs vs AARP, I discovered that AARP gave me less coverage with considerable more expenditure. AARP used to be a great advantage for seniors - what happened??? I think that along with everything else that started as a good program has been co-opted by the corrupt and greedy thugs within our democracy.
