Anybody watch President Jimmy Carter last night on Charlie Rose? |
|
I love that man. He is honest to a fault, says what he belives and not ashamed to admit when he is wrong. Bust most importantly he is a true Christian. From someone who knows the ME situation inside out, he gave Clinton a slap and almost vindicated Arafat's position on the peace plan Clinton tried to shove down his throat. I had read about it before but Carter says that it was an agreement that left the Palestinians without a contiguous state and the issue of East Jerusalem was wholly unacceptable for the Palestinians and that Arafat would have been assassinated had he returned with that agreement. (I had read several accounts of this plan from different sources and Clinton was truthful when he said that Arafat was the one to reject it but Clinton was disingenuous by not telling why). Carter also took on the Christian fuddy right, the Iraq situation (he was against the invasion, says the Bush administration wants oil and power), is saddened by the ME situation and doesn't think the Palestinians are getting a fair shake but knows because of his own work with the Israelis and Palestinians on the peace plan that Sharon dismissed even before it was released that many Jews inside and outside Israel are fed up with the Sharon government and that there is real hope that they will prevail.
It was a great interview with a truly great human being who walks the talk.

I wish I could have seen that interview. I have great respect for former Pres. Carter. He was much too honest and pure to be in D.C. politics. I agree with him wholeheartedly on the ME situation.
On edit: I remember the 80' election. Carter's problem is he told the truth and he encouraged Americans to conserve energy. Reagan boosted American arrogance by telling the people what they wanted to hear, even though it was a lie. We were too great a nation to conserve energy, blah, blah, blah. We are on the path we are today because American character is not up to par--we'd rather elect a phony liar than someone with integrity who is going to be honest with us and ask us to sacrifice a bit for our nation.

4. If I'm stating the obvious I apologize |
|
but anyone on this thread that hasn't read THE UNFINISHED PRESIDENCY really should. I got to meet JC at a B&N when he was touring for one of his books. Extremely nice and gentle in person, positively radiates warmth. I'm not an apologist who pretends Carter's presidency was a success, but, like Truman before him, it was reassuring to have a man with a soul and a conscious in the Oval Office.

5. It was a wonderful interview.......... |
|
Also, I was fascinated as he talked about the Revolutionary War. His knowledge of our history is so impressive. Unfortunately, I fell asleep right as he was asked who was the "greater" man, Thomas Jefferson or George Washington. I think he said GW, but I didn't hear his reasons.

6. I must say it bothered me to hear him say he thinks Bunnypants* |

will be "re-elected"
NOTE to Jimmy: You have to be "elected" once ot be re-elected.
He also said a couple things that made me despair, in that, while lib-types are bending over backwards to be fair and honest, the Repugs are the other side are disemboweling them with no compunction, conscience, morals, or remorse.

8. As I said, he really says what he thinks and tells the truth. |
|
He's refreshing. He hate the fact that he thinks Bush will be re-elected but that is what he thinks.

Why blame me? Because you can't stand that Carter said it?
Funny, when I post Dean's own words and actions, Deanies consider that a bash, too. Go figure. Maybe deep down you don't like some of the things Dean has said and done, so you blame whoever posts the items?
You might also start to realize that liberals have VERY good reason to be distrustful of Dean and distrustful of the media. You relegate the concerns to bashing to make it easier to dismiss for those who prefer to keep Dean unexamined.

7. Did he mention his & Zbig's little plan called "The Afghan Trap"? |
|
http://emperors-clothes.com/interviews/brz.htmQuestion: The former director of the CIA, Robert Gates, stated in his memoirs <"From the Shadows">, that American intelligence services began to aid the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan 6 months before the Soviet intervention. In this period you were the national security adviser to President Carter. You therefore played a role in this affair. Is that correct?
Brzezinski: Yes. According to the official version of history, CIA aid to the Mujahadeen began during 1980, that is to say, after the Soviet army invaded Afghanistan, 24 Dec 1979. But the reality, secretly guarded until now, is completely otherwise: Indeed, it was July 3, 1979 that President Carter signed the first directive for secret aid to the opponents of the pro-Soviet regime in Kabul. And that very day, I wrote a note to the president in which I explained to him that in my opinion this aid was going to induce a Soviet military intervention.
Thanks Jimmy. <not> Don't ask questions!
