Dean's brother's body found in central Laos grave
MIA Aussie found in twin grave

By Nick Papps
19nov03

THE remains of an Australian journalist shot almost 30 years ago have been found by US authorities.

The bodies of Neil Sharman and American tourist Charles Dean, brother of front-running US presidential candidate Howard Dean, have been uncovered in a grave in central Laos.

The discovery ends a 30-year mystery after the men were taken by communist forces in September 1974.

Yesterday Mr Sharman's brother Ian told the Herald Sun the men were handcuffed, executed, and their bodies thrown into a bomb crater.

He said US army officials had told him one body had been found on top of the other, and two skulls, bones and shoes had been recovered.

13. according to Howard his parents thought Charlie may have been CIA…
Chapter 11: The Chapter Most Worth Reading. Dean on the execution of his brother Charlie by communists in Laos in 1975 and on the death of his father in 2001. His parents thought Charlie was CIA: "There was speculation that Charlie was in Laos because he was working for the CIA and I think my parents believed that to be the case. Personally, I don't think he was employed by the U.S. government in any capacity, but we'll probably never know the answer to that question." Dean admits that he has spoken to counselors about his brother's death, and the chapter ends, "I'm sure that, had he lived, he'd be the one running for president and not me."

5. I'm not sure about this story.....
look at this snip:

<snip> Mr Sharman had been a journalist in Darwin and Sydney. Mr Dean, 24, was the son of John Dean, a former adviser to US president Richard Nixon.

He was also the brother of Howard Dean, who is leading the race to be the Democrat candidate in the 2004 United States presidential election.

Col. O'Hara said Mr Dean's family had been told of the discovery.

since when did John Dean (who worked for Nixon) become Howard's dad??

They have some facts confused, maybe??

9. The "John Dean" fact is what's incorrect
I've looked this subject up a bit... Charles Dean was Howard's brother.

10. an AP headline last week referred to Howard as John…
I don't think this really casts any doubt on the veracity of the story.

11. the bodies were found ten days ago
so I think Dean already knew about this and was glad to finally have closure. It's interesting the US press hasn't picked up on this story.

14. since the story has nothing to do with AWOL, the media whores here
in the US don't care.

But then again, they may pick this story up and do their usual media frenzy stuff with everyone trying to get Dean on their show to talk about this and to see if he will cry on cue. Just you watch, I can almost bet my life on it.

16. Isn't it ODD that the bodies just happened to be found by US Authorities?
Come on! For 30 years they've been missing and they just conveniently turn up when Dean is running for President. And the story mixes up names tying Howard Dean somehow to John Dean? This has got to be too weird......not to ask more questions about. Maybe that's why US Press hasn't picked up on it.

18. Also the article says bodies are being taken to be identified. How were
they so sure it was Dean's brother and the journalist. They don't mention that dog tags were found on the bodies and they say their were others in the grave. They found skulls and some bones, and yet the article mentions "handcuffs" and that the bodies were on top of each other. Yet, there are only "some bones, skulls and shoes."

I don't know....scratching my head........

23. Well, it may be because they were the only probable
Caucasian bodies (height and bone structure suggests) and the story matched what had been reported before...
