Felipe Sanchez, who is now serving in Iraq and whose family spends part of every summer in Osterville, joined the Marines three years ago even though the Immigration and Naturalization Service had not yet processed his citizenship.

Sanchez was brought to the United States by his stepfather, Fox News anchorman David Asman, after Asman married Sanchez's mother, Marta Cecilia, in 1988.

Asman wrote in the Wall Street Journal, "When I asked him whether he was bitter that the country he was about to serve had fouled up in granting him citizenship, he mused that maybe it was better this way: 'Now I can earn my citizenship,'" Sanchez told him.

Asman's column ran in the Cape Cod Times in January.
