My HR Director Cried Today Re: Gay Marriage
yes, we live in MA

she has been working for this moment for about 10 years. has dumped TONS of her own money, time and activism for "her" cause.

i logged onto DU this morning and she happened to be 2 cubes down. i let out a rather loud "HELL YES!"

she calls to me and says, "what's up?"

GAY MARRIAGE HAS PASSED THE SJC in MA i scream.

she broke down. tears of joy. she is so happy (although she is single currently) as she has fought long and hard for this to pass.

"FINALLY I am 'equal'", she wails.

now, all you 'doubters', want me to tell her YOU believe this is a BAD thing and will hurt "OUR" cause?

not bloody likely

3. Our cause will be strengthened by this because it leads to breaking the
grip that the religious right has on this country.

The law will stand up to the fundies and say that discrimination against gays is illegal.

What ever diminishes any one of us diminishes all of us.

4. it is a big deal
a wonderful deal.
but when we are done celebrating we will have to fierce like junk yard dawgs to get the backs of candidates who support this.
and encourage them to be strong and postive and then smear the fuck out of the repukes over this. personally i vote for the word superstitious.

5. The 2004 Republican Platform
Okay, we WILL starve you and send you off to war - but THEY want gay marriage!

Sounds like a real winner, doesn't it?

8. This is going to become a Massive Wedge Issue
That the Republicans will use to divide the nation -- divide and conquer, rah, rah, rah.

It is going to get very ugly around this. Expect the demagogues to rage and howl from now through Nov. '04.

Soddom and Gommorah. Saddam and Osamma. Oh, weep and wail the agony of aeons.

6. Hopefully the 1.1 million
gay people who voted for the chimp will reconsider. The rethugs and many Democrats are out in full force trying desperately to keep gay people from achieving equality and equal benefits, hope they remember. Someone mentioned a VERY interesting idea earlier, if they are SO certain that marriage is "sacred" than try outlawing divorce, that ought to be interesting cause most of these guys are on wife number what again.

9. Congrats to those who live in civilized areas
of the US. I live in MO and I am sure the Cubs will win the World Series before Gay marriage passes here.

I saw the need for gays and lesbians to have the right afforded all married couples while completing my open enrollment package for 2004. The company I work for has domestic partner benefits. One's domestic partner and the children of one's domestic partner can be covered under the health insurance provided by the company. However there is a catch...

I'll try to explain....

For married couples the portion paid by the employee to insure his/her spouse and children is taken out of PRETAX dollars, thus reducing the employee's overall tax burden.

For those claiming domestic partner benefits, the portion paid by the employee is taken on of AFTER TAX dollars.

This really opened my eyes to the need for gay marriage to be recognized and accorded all the rights and privileges associated with marriage.

10. not to be a wet blanket but this is not a done deal
licences will not be issued forthwith, better check the fine print. And if you think this won't galvanize the opposition, think again.

This is far from over and it has the potential to wind up being very bad.

my lesbian friend CRIED in HAPPINESS today! she FINALLY felt "Equal"

yeah, it will take 6 months to get the licenses. big fucking deal. it will take probably TWO YEARS to TRY and get it overturned.

to the naysayers here on DU: "SHAME ON YOU"

she deserves it and i am DAMN glad for her and all the others.

since when did DUers feel so "CONCERNED" about the Limbaughs of this fucked up country and what they think?

right now, those of you "worried" about the broader picture DISGUST ME as YOU ARE LOOKING OUT FOR YOUR OWN INTERESTS.

i am beginning to wonder about the collective "DU" i am VERY sorry to say.

bullshit. it will stand.

12. Let the Republicans TRY to hammer us!
Let's get back on OFFENSE here. Remind the people of the USA just which party is in favor of EQUALITY FOR ALL PEOPLE! Remind them that the Constitution protects us ALL, and we are all equal under the law. Remind the people that the Constitution is predicated on protecting the minority from the tyanny of the majority. It's time for a history lesson and the Democrats should be teaching the damned class.

13. this is the correct reaction
I understand wanting to feel a victory but this is not yet one. With diligence and effort it can be. We'll all need to work hard for this.

14. Congratulations to all you gay and lesbian folk.
It's probably inevitable that you will win, as just about every civil rights war was won eventually, but the war isn't over yet. I heard on the radio how the governor of Mass supports an amendment defining 'marriage' as between man and woman. For years, I've thought that the last real civil rights battle was over gay rights, and I think we're about to see that battle being joined. And of course, the SC still gets to weigh in on this, assuming there are court challenges. It's not over yet, but one big step closer is one big step closer.
