Who killed Lee Harvey Oswald ?
And what was his reasoning for killing him? He was not a fanatical Democrat, the best I recall... He did have connections to the mob. Did someone else know that Ruby was going to kill Oswald? How much do people know about Jack Ruby?

2. Jack Ruby (1911-1967)
Edited on Tue Nov-18-03 07:21 PM by Jack Rabbit
His real name was Jacob Rubinstein.

Ruby was the owner of a nightclub in Dallas that featured strippers. He was probably a little looney. He was believed top have mob connections and may have been a small-time hood. Ruby was said to have admired Kennedy and to have cried on hearing his death.

Ruby was convicted of killing Oswald in 1964. His defense attorney was Melvin Belli, although Belli generally specialized in torts rather than criminal trials. Ruby died of cancer about two and a half years later.

3. Ruby (Rubenstein) protected by Nixon.
Richard Nixon's Greatest Cover-Up:
His Ties to the Assassination of President Kennedy

by Don Fulsom

EXCERPT...

Giancana's half-bother Chuck and nephew Sam claimed in their 1992 book Double Cross that the Mafia don had a long, warm, and mutually rewarding relationship with Nixon that dated back to the 1940s. In those times, Giancana was helping Chicago Syndicate boss Anthony Accardo consolidate the city's rackets and gambling operations, and Nixon was a freshman congressman from California. In recounting for his relatives a big favor the congressman did for Giancana back then, the gangster established a direct link between Nixon and a Chicago hoodlum who later moved to Texas and went on to shoot Lee Harvey Oswald: "Nixon's done me some favors, all right, got us some highway contracts, worked with the unions and overseas. And we've helped him and his CIA buddies out, too. Shit, he even helped my guy in Texas, (Jack) Ruby, get out of testifying in front of Congress back in forty-seven … By sayin' Ruby worked for him."

A 1947 memo, found in 1975 by a scholar going through a pile of recently released FBI documents, supports Giancana's contention. In the memo, addressed to a congressional committee investigating organized crime, an FBI assistant states: "It is my sworn testimony that one Jack Rubenstein of Chicago ... is performing information functions for the staff of Congressman Richard Nixon, Republican of California. It is requested Rubenstein not be called for open testimony in the aforementioned hearings." (Later in 1947, Rubenstein moved to Dallas and shortened his last name.) The FBI subsequently called the memo a fake, but the reference service Facts on File considers it authentic.

Undercover work for the young Congressman Nixon would have been in keeping with Ruby's history as a police tipster and government informant. In 1950, Ruby gave closed-door testimony to Estes Kefauver's special Senate committee investigating organized crime. Committee staffer Luis Kutner later described Ruby as "a syndicate lieutenant who had been sent to Dallas to serve as a liaison for Chicago mobsters." In exchange for Ruby's testimony, the FBI is said to have eased up on its probe of organized crime in Dallas. In 1959, Ruby became an informant for the FBI.

Ruby's old Chicago boss, Giancana, was murdered in his home in Oak Park, Ill., in 1975 — shortly before he was to have appeared before a Senate committee investigating assassinations. Seven .22-caliber bullets were blasted into his mouth and neck, Mob symbolism for "talks too much."

4. Ruby was ordered to take one for the team.
He was working for Giancana (Chicago, Ruby's hometown),and Carlos Marcello,(New Orleans crime family) who together ran the Dallas mob operations.

He was no sad patriot trying to save Jackie the pain of a long trial.

Thats the second most notorious line of bullshit, second only to the magic bullet theory.

5. he also had close ties to the Dallas police, knew Oswald and
was an FBI informant.

His statement after his trial:

RUBY: Everything pertaining to what's happening has never come to the surface. The world will never know the true facts, of what occurred, my motives. The people had - that had so much to gain and had such an ulterior motive for putting me in the position I'm in, will never let the true facts come above board to the world.

REPORTER: Are these people in very high positions Jack?

RUBY: Yes.

6. Obviously, Ruby shot Oswald...
after that, who knows. Ruby was apparently extremely nervous until he heard that Oswald was dead, then he calmed down.

Talking to Warren and Ford, Ruby said he had info about the assassination, but they let it drop. Ruby died about 2 1/2 years after he was convicted, from a very fast moving cancer.

7. What I don't get in all this
is that with all the mysterious deaths surrounding the JFK Assasination, why was Ruby not iced after taking down Oswald? Would that have made a conspiracy seem to real in the public's eyes?

8. He did get iced.
Two-and-a-half years after he shot Oswald he died from a fast acting cancer. In that time, the Warren Commission ignored his story. He indicated Johnson and the NAZIs were behind the President's murder.

Two things:

1. CIA brought in a lot of NAZIs at the end of World War II to fight the commie bastids (Operation PAPERCLIP).

2. CIA experimented with bio-weapons, including cancer-causing agents.

3. History channel eyewitness says David Ferrie — commercial pilot, CIA contract agent, and Oswald handler — was working on that type of project.

9. What I meant was
why wasn't he killed soon after Oswald's murder by "suicide" or pushing his car over a cliff and calling it a traffic accident?

11. well, for one thing, he was in custody,
so no pushing his car off a cliff.

And for another, though I don't have the links handy, he apparently received assurance that he'd get off lightly and acclaimed a hero if he played along.

12. I don't recall that he had a lot of opportunity to speak with media....
while he was in jail?? This was right after the trial and I think most people simply thought he was trying to implicate others to save himself. Next thing you know, he is dead from cancer...

10. There was only one journalist who ever interviewed Ruby
alone after his arrest. That was columnist Dorothy Kilgallen. She was later found dead from a combination of alcohol and barbiturates, before her interview was ever printed. No notes or records of any kind were found of the interview. Hmmmm. . .

13. I find Kilgallen's death particularly haunting
for some reason. Thanks for mentioning her.

Here's some info on what Kilgallen learned, and how she died:

On November 8, 1965, Dorothy Kilgallen, was found dead in her apartment shortly after returning from Dallas where she had interviewed Jack Ruby and had conducted her own investigation of the JFK murder during several trips to cover the Ruby trial.

...

...it is a fact that when Dorothy returned to New York, she told friends that she had discovered that Ruby and the slain Officer J.D. Tippit had been friends. They had been seen together in Ruby's Carousel Club at a meeting 2 weeks before the assassination in the company of Bernard Weissman, who had placed the "JFK-Wanted for Treason" newspaper ad in Dallas newspapers on November 22nd, 1963. Studying the Warren Commission Report, Killgallen deduced that the meeting had also been reported to Chief Justice Warren AND that the identity of "the fourth man",which she had been unable to ascertain, had been reported to Warren as "a rich Texas oil man", as Earl Warren described him in the official transcript.

...

Kilgallen had told Israel about a very mysterious and sinister player in the JFK assassination to whom she gave the code name "ferret man". From the description of the individual, it is clear that "ferret man" was none other than David Ferrie, another known associate of Jack Ruby involved in gun running, the Marcello mob and other anti-Castro operations from Florida to Texas. At one time, Ruby and Ferrie were co-owners of an airplane.

Nightlife's producer, Nick Vanoff, pleaded with her not to broach the subject on the air. She had arrived at the studio with a folder full of pertinent and explosive notes documents. She kept the folder closed throughout the interview. Vanoff, asked her agent, Bob Bach, to send her "a dozen long-stemmed roses."

On Sunday November 8, Dorothy Kilgallen was found dead, sitting fully dressed, upright in bed, early in the morning. The New York City Police investigated and the coroner found that Dorothy Kilgallen had died from ingestion of a lethal combination of alchohol and barbituates. All her notes and the article on which she had been working to "blow the JFK assassination wide open" also disappeared.

14. not exactly
Kilgallen had a five minute interview with Ruby in the court room during his trial. It wasn't even private. And she didn't die shortly after. It was over a year and a half later.
