As they might well be flying a DIFFERENT flag with a Swastika on it had we not come to their aid when they needed us most!

(Rant OFF)

OK, OK...Just lettin' off some steam! But, seriously, CATWOMAN, thanks a lot for sharing...just shows how much Dub has done for--er, to--our image over there. Was it part of the Neo-Cons' PNAC Blueprint to have people in ALL of our ally nations angry at us? If so, they've done one heckuva great job in THAT department, at least! :eyes:

When I was in England in 1980, they called a general strike against Maggie Thatcher's government. The Socialist Worker paper had a poster that read: "If the Tories get up your nose, PICKET!" I've still got a copy of that one! :D

B-)

Get your history right.
They were standing up to naziism BEFORE the ever-indispensible USA ... but you wanna denegrate their heroism and courage, go ahead. You listened to one too many neo-con history revisonists. We were not their savior...you have bought in to conservative political correctness.
that woman has every fucking right to wave the new amerikkkan flag.

28. We were letting them fight alone pre 12/41...
But because Pearl Harbor happened you call that actively "coming to the rescue"...
The British are not to be denegrated as "surrender cheese monkeys" or whatever the popular pejorative in neo con circles is for non-americans who were giving their blood and sweat for a noble cause LONG before it ever occured to us to "save them".

30. What are you talking about?
Edited on Wed Nov-19-03 01:00 AM by WillyBrandt
Nobody here has called the British cheese-eating surrender monkeys. No one claimed that the US shouldn't have really confronted Hitler easier and with more force (one reason I like FDR is that he pushed as hard as he could).

Moreover, we were already fighting a (De facto) naval war against the Germans well before Pearl Harbor.

Also, there was a TON of activity in the US to get America actually fighting Hitler full force before Pearl Harbor (Committe To Save America by Aiding the Allies, I think it was called). Pearl Harbor didn't transform isolationists into warriors overnight--the underpinnings were already there. Pearl Harbor struck the match as it were.

Nontheless, the US did save Britain--and itself. There was no way the UK could have held out indefinitely (hence the Churchill quote I offered).

I will grant you your talent for tearing down strawmen. You can really deconstruct arguments that no one here has made.

Since when is saying that America pretty much turned the tide in WWII and saved Europe revisionist?

We came over and kicked ass. That is fact.

Britian was doing ok, but would have collapsed soon or later.

Sorry if I sound like a jingoist (which I am not) but facts are facts.

29. No, it isn't fact
Russia probably did far more to bring about the fall of Hitler than the US did. Russia took far, *far* more casualties than the US. By the time US troops got over to Europe in any numbers, Hitler was already breaking his teeth in the east.

The war might have been a lot longer and rougher without US participation, but the US notion that we somehow won it single-handedly is another of those typical self-flattering distortions of history that Americans seem so prone to.

32. NOT single-handedly
But it absolutely tipped the scales in a big way.

The Russians took a HUGE portion of the casualties, but it's unlikely that they would have won--at best they could have had a sort of stalemate--had the US not intervened. What is overlooked often is the totally vital role us material aid to the USSR played: it wasn't merely the Western Front--it was also the shoes, the socks, the guns, the bullets, the helmets that were all being shipping en masse before Normandy.

38. I'm still not over that disgusting travesty of a movie U-571.
We appreciated the assistance and all that, but few Americans realise the consequences if the BRITISH hadn't captured and deciphered the Enigma machine, let alone if British/Norwegian raids hadn't slowed the Nazi nuclear program. Perhaps we wouldn't have been the only country flying a different flag! All this chest-beating about America's military prowess gets on my nerves, frankly.

39. Headline: Hollywood Film not Historically Accurate
I'm upset as the evil bastardization that Pearl Harbor was.

But little was more ridiculous that this time in Parliament with a bunch of MPs bitching about how the Patriot--that horrible film--made the UK look bad...

There have been a TON of shows on PBS/Discovery Channel/The Learning Channel/elsewhere about breaking the Enigma. Books regarding Enigma have sold well. U-571 has not constructed the American consciousness (such as it is) about code-breaking in WWII.

42. Oh, and the average American spends more time reading and
watching PBS/Discovery Channel/The Learning Channel than absorbing Hollywood claptrap do they? I doubt that all the above combined put much of a dent in the American consciousness, certainly when compared to the technicolour "history" lessons put out by noted Anglophobe Mr. Gibson et al. By the way, I don't recall British MPs up in arms about "The Patriot" (which was, indeed, bollocks); perhaps I missed it. I did note that Parliament was pissed about the insulting "U-571", and rightly so. There are still people alive today who are connected with the actual events, and whose contributions are belittled by such misleading tripe.

31.  It's revisionist to say the Brits are feeble little pussies who
are eternaly indebted to Big Bad USA...cause we all know they were just cowering helplessly in a corner as fascists fought them for years without Big Bad USA.
I am not talking about the physical steel and iron that we had at our dispoasl to create an instant war juggernaut...you point to that and say "See? without us they were doomed."
They had more balls, and still do, than most americans will ever know about. But the neo-cons have Chamberlain as their whipping boy, so they get to gloat and strut and spit on their honor. Who the fuck cares that we were able to pour steel in record fashion? The Brits had the steel of spirit. And still do.

44. Personally, I really like the pic......
But I don't have a problem with what he said. The Brits did a great job of fighting the Nazis but they would have lost without our help. They were on the ropes (see Dunkirk) but hanging in true British heroic fashion when we got into the war.
On a side note, the fact the German war machine was so powerful, especially early int he war, is what made me laugh when Repugs compared Sadam to Hitler.

But the poster who said they would have lost without our help is correct. And let's not confuse our leadership now with the current leadership. FDR was perhaps this country's greatest president and someone who knew right from wrong, unlike the Chimp. I have zero problem with people being proud of our contribution to defeating the Axis. It was a just cause. Or would you have preferred to watch Hitler wipe out 6 million more Jews?

34. I understand your anger, but...
the "America First" movement, led primarily by conservatives in America, did everything they could to prevent America from entering WWII. Some of them were isolationists (see Pat Buchannan and his ilk) and some of them were doing business with the Nazis (Prescott Bush).
Considering what the conservatives in America are doing now, that flag just might as well be apropriate. It makes me shudder, but I see how close we are coming to a facist state, all in the name of "national security".
Germany, circa 1930 had the Communists to scare its citizens.
America, circa 2003, has terrorists.
The similarities are striking.

Eventually I think it brings you back to a healing place..

Maybe we can see this misery that our country is going through right now as digging the skeletons out of the closet. They've been hiding there in one form or another for a long time; Bush is just adding them so fast the closet isn't big enough anymore and they are busting out all over.

Don't kid yourself. She does not denegrate my flag...she is waving the flag of the new Amerikka. What is wrong with making it clear that it is a real entity? The fact that it exists within our borders may appall you, but don't blame her or call her ant-American for making the point. She, like I, is an anti-amerikkkan. Good on her.
