1. Safire Doesn't Even Try to Be Truthful
As Safire ages he's giving up the effort to be convincing. He assumes there's an audience for the stuff he writes, and he may be right. But he says so many off-the-wall things that it's likely that the passing years have taken their toll. He's not even trying anymore.

For the record, I never liked him. I always wondered what a Nixon speech-writer was doing in the guise of a New York Times columnist. Then again, the Times used to be respectable, or at least made the effort. Punch Jr. has run that paper into the ground.

2. Noticw which Democrat he takes his jab at,
and notice the washed-up prune described himself as a 'hawkish idealist,' when the truth is he's a cynical turd that resists flushing.
