Poll question: Another Marriage Proposal |
|
The Mass. SC says, and I agree, that same sex marriage should be legal because of the civil (legal advantages) enjoyed by married couples.
One way to address this issue is to remove the legal institution of marriage, and make it strictly an extra-legal institution with no legal status.

2. Given that 50% of all marriages end up in divorce anyway... |
|
What's the point?
Abolish it completely. That way, EVERYONE is on an equal playing field. AND the hate mongers in this country won't have to resort to enshrining hate in the United States Constitution (the Federal Marriage Amendment, which could very well pass right now)

3. If you don't believe in marriage |
|
don't get one.
On a personal level, each person can make up their own mind, however on a legal and political level I can't think of a more disasterous position.
I won't even go into the ramifications for children.

Child support is an issue legally distinct from marriage. Currently, a large percentage of children are born and/or raised outside of the institution of parental marriage.
I'm not saying abolish marriage. If you want to get married do it in a church, in a ceremony WITHOUT legal status.

4. Marriage has become a joke in the 21st Century |
|
High divorce rate.
Kids born without support of stable partnerships, regardless of sexual orientation. Salivating divorce lawyers.
Cheating.
It's just another aspect of society that's time has come and gone.

7. legal protections are important |
|
especially as the economic playing field remains uneven for men and women. will probably always be mostly the mommies who take the mommy track. and even if it is not, a domestic partnership is as deserving as a business partnership of protection from the legal system. people are no longer confined by marraige, legally. you can get out whenever you want. but you can't leave it up to temporarily insane people to fairly dissolve what can be a complex finacial and legal entity.

8. Neocons want to pretend it's just a religious institution anyway |
|
Marriage is a legally binding contract. Anybody who's been through a long divorce realizes that.
You have an interesting idea, but I can't see it ever going anywhere.
