Freeper-types accost Dean in Iowa
The first pic has some freeper types holding signs against gay marriage. Where do people like this come from? What kind of Christian would say that God hates anybody?

may be a repost

2. Sounds like the Fred Phelps gang--but they're in Kansas.
Unless these imbeciles traveled from Kansas to Iowa for the occasion.

10. Oh no...Phelps and his IDIOTS will travel.....
That was my first thought when I saw the signs--of course living in Kansas I know all about that bunch. This must have taken priority over protesting at a funeral of a gay person.

These are the kinds of people that Repigs want to call their own?? Holy crap.....

39. They have supporters everywhere
Remember, they have a website, and I'm sure that the candidates' stances on gay marriage are posted there. I myself am not going to go look at it to find out, though.

19. Have hate, will travel
That's their motto. They're very willing to travel to spread their message of hate. I actually recognize the "God Hates Fag Enablers" from another protest of theirs in Long Island a few weeks ago.

Unfortunately they must get tired of picketing in Kansas because they show up here occasionally. Gotta picket any abortion clinic within 1,000 miles you know.

9. slinkerwink, you are totally right
That is how Dean should frame this. Remember the reaction that Phelps got when he protested the funeral of Matthew Sheppard and held up signs saying, "God supports those who kill fags." That turned off a lot of people.

I encourage these people to protest. Then we can frame the debate the way we want to, "all people should be treated with respect...blah,blah,blah."

Instead of the way the GOP are going to try to frame this as about gay marriage.

Dean should say, "this isn't about gay marriage. The people will decide whether they support gay marriage. Not the polticians in Washington. This is about decency and treating people like human beings."

And I doubt they get those ratings from just the DEM base.

I hope these freeps follow Dean/DEMS everywhere- moderate, non-hatful voters need to see the REAL soul of the GOP...

something like 68% APPROVED of gay marriage. Significant because AOL tends to run 3-2 repug.

BTW, they are not following around Dean, that is the Iowa state dinner. The picture is miscaptioned.

14. Enemies like that..
Can only help Dean.

Most of those freaks (looks like Phelp's obsessed nutcases out of Topeka, Kansas, alright) are strong Bush supporters!

These are the type people the Bush Administration, apparantly, embraces. Certainly I have not heard the Bush campaign denounce them.

If you see a phelpy nutcase, ask him who they support - and spread the word.

How many really want to be associated with those wierdly obsessed wackjobs?

23. Phelps..
Don't know much about him, except that he is a far right religious wackjjob with a small but devoted following, based out of Topeka, KS. They have an extreme and obsessive anti-gay 'platform.' Phelps has at least a dozen children, about half of whome have denounced Phelps and his group.

They are known for carrying obscene anti-gay 'hate' signs, typically saying 'God hates gays' with homosexual acts depicted, where ever political figures appear. It does not seem to matter what political affiliation the politician has - they just go where ever the crowds happen are, it seems.

They are something to behold.

33. Actually...
Three of Phelps' children have left the family 'compund' in Topeka, and are estranged from their father; his second son Mark, his eldest daughter Katherine, and his third son Nate. According to Mark and Nate Phelps, who live near each other in Southern California, Fred Phelps beat them and his other children viciously and repeatedly when they were children, often with the handle of a mattock (a hand-held tool for tilling earth, about the size of an axe). Attempting to differentiate Phelps' family from his cult is a useless task... Phelps' family constitute the majority of his deluded followers.

Phelps and his family cohorts are nothing but a side show, a mere nuissance to the public who have resorted to preying on innocent people for the sole purpose of sating their patriarch's dangerously sadistic personality. Even "like-minded" fundamentalists won't have anything to do with them, particarly after the story written by Jon Michael Bell that exposed the maliciousness of the "Reverend" and the years of abuse he put his family through, and seeks to spread to others.

21. Haha..
You might be right..

I saw a contingent of them last summer at the inauguration of the Bob Dole Institute in Lawrence, KS, and they had a strong presence on the GOP side of the street at Truman High right in front of where bush was speaking when he made his first stop in Kansas City as 'president.'

So I kind of assumed they were bush supporters.. but you are probably right.

One of these days, if I can bring myself to get close enough, I want to ask who they support. Besides their mentally ill geru, Phelps, that is.

25. you nailed it...
they seem to worship no real (or imagined) God other than Fred, himself. If it comes from his mouth it must be true. They seem to periodically support themselves with obscure and out of context bible passages, but damned if I can figure out what religion these people are (besides followers of Phred Phelps). People like this are just plain scary...even to a bible-thumper like myself...

I mean are they still slaughtering goats and stoning their neighbors in some parts of the country?? Those signs, on their own, take away any credibility those protesters may have thought they had at one time. Blech.
