2. It's a range of opinions... |
|
some are upset that a person is not free to do what he likes with his own money, thanks in part to the War on Drugs and the Patriot Act. Some say it can't be money laundering, because the money wasn't obtained illegally. Some are realists who understand that the government agencies which investigate this type of thing are likely to take a dim view of an apparent "structuring" of the withdrawals to evade reporting requirements. And then there are a few (small minority) who simply dismiss the whole thing as just a smear campaign with little substance. All in all, I would say that a fair range of reasonable opinions was expressed. My overall sense is that a certain number of freepers are not prepared to justify Rush's behavior no matter what it might have been. Perhaps their feelings of self-respect won't let them.

7. I think the big piece of ammo |
|
that Limbaugh has is that the bank told many many customers to structure withdrawls under $10K to avoid the reporting requirements. They made such a regular practice of this that they were fined $10 Million.
My wife is a "titled" person at a sizable bank and trust me, banks hate the paperwork involved with cash transactions over $10K and to this day many of them let customers know about how to avoid the paper work.

wife know that banks who do not filed these CTRs are just a guilty as the party trying to avoid showing the money laundering.

4. You wouldn't believe it. The "Cult Crowd" says... |
|
'I don't get what's the big deal. I mean Rush said he used the money for remodeling. Makes sense to me.'
'Well Rush is a rich man and 9K is like $100 to us (for "walking-around money).' Yeah. right!
Oh yeah, then what did Rush use to pay for his drugs? MasterCard, Visa, Amex, Personal Check, Money Order?
Think about it you idiots at FR.

that $10K to someone with Limbaughs income and wealth is more like $50 max to you and me. Its easily 'walking around money'.
People at that income and wealth level will spend $10K on a bottle of wine without even thinking about it.
Hell, a $10K watch to them is probably their junk watch.

But CASH?????? In our age of ATM, credit and debit cards why would he need to walk around with that kind of CASH?? Seriously!!
What person in their right minds walks around with almost $9k in spending money unless they're undertaking a drug deal or some other transaction which they prefer to avoid a paper trail for? Helloooo? Ever heard of Visa or American Express. The "he's rich, it's spending money for him" argument holds no water in the court of common sense. Wake up!

10. A lot of people pay cash |
|
for big ticket items. I do. Not $10K cash. But there are a lot of people who use cash for virtually everything.

15. The only people I know who pay cash for a big-ticken item |
|
are people buying used cars and boats, etc., from private parties. where they might not want to hand over their property for a check. Most of the wealthy people I've known carry little or no cash at all. They're wealthy, people know it, and they are given credit privileges everywhere they go, without checks, without credit cards, and without cash, but on their word alone. While a lot of people use cash for virtually everything, almost none of these people are wealthy people.
Remember that guy some years ago who traveled all over the place, stayed in the finest hotels, ate in the finest restaurants, etc., etc., because he convinced people he was someone else (who was wealthy)?

17. i missed this story but this is interesting |
|
during the last go round about medicare, i heard him say he went to the doctor and tried to pay cash. he is self insured and was incensed because the dr's office wasn't prepared to take cash and he doesn't carry a credit card because he doesn't believe in them.
since we know about the oxy, i bet he was trying to hide multiple doctors and multiple prescriptions by paying cash to avoid a CC paper trail.
i think a guy like him would love walking around with a roll in his pocket...makes him feel good and important...
btw...i happen to agree with him about credit cards...but i use a debit card.

11. um, ah, his maid complained that she had fronted him 100k |
|
and couldn't afford any more. His reply was that there are problems with taking too much money out of the bank in cash.
It may not be much to him in terms of worth but he walked that cash right over to his drug dealer.
Think of how pathetic it is for Rush to owe money to his maid, but this issue worried him so that he did it anyway.
