DU's god_bush_n_cheney solves a "18181" question
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 02:46 AM by BevHarris
We had not been able to find out what voting system was used in Comal County, Texas, where three Republican candidates in a row got 18,181 votes. I figured it wasn't Diebold, because I have a list of all their installations and Comal County wasn't on there.

When I called they got a little huffy and said they'd call me back; they didn't.

One of the researchers who has contributed to Black Box Voting information this year is DU's god_bush_n_cheney. This week, he put on his best native Texan accent (he is originally from Texas). He sweet-talked the Comal County elections official into admitting that those machines are: ES&S.

Now we know. He has persuaded a lot of people to open up and talk to him over the phone, and some have even sent some pretty hard-to-reach documents. Two people who didn't succumb to his charms were director of The Election Center R. Doug Lewis, who disconnected him when asked for a list of certified version numbers, and Diebold Election Systems President Bob Urosevich, who told him "If you don't back off, you're gonna get a visit." (!)

Anyway. Now we know: ES&S machines were the 18181 anomaly, and ES&S machines were in Baldwin County Alabama where the governor's race flipped from Democrat Don Siegelman to Republican Bob Riley when 6300 still-unaccounted for votes disappeared overnight. ES&S machines were also used in Scurry County, Texas, where a landslide was declared for a Republican that turned out to be for a Democrat.

Anyone who thinks it's time to woo informants from ES&S, please raise your hand.

Bev Harris

Can't that be consideerred a personal threat worthy of law enforcement investigation?

I think he said that. Somewhere around the "wax on, wax off" bit.

Tell ya afta.

"you're gonna get a visit" sounds like a threat of physical violence, and that is a terrorist threat.

8. I'd take it that way too
because no legitimate businessman on the up and up would say that to any member of the public.

A visit from whom? Is he inferring he has goons on the payroll, or is he inferring he has the Justice Department at his disposal? Either way, he showed his hand and what he is exactly about (of course we already knew this, but that statement to gbc confirms it).

I hate these assholes.

These titians of industry/sarcasm have got to be making enemies within their own companies. Most workers have a limit as to how much hypocrisy they can stomach. Time to get the word out that true patriots stand up to coporate bullies running coup machines in the voting booth.

And a foot raised for a kick :kick:

Thanks, Bev, and all the clever evil DUers working so hard to take America back from the junta and restore it to the people.

16. I vote on ES & S machines
Crap.:(

The Baldwin County, Alabama thing has always bugged me because, one, those are the same kind of optical scan machines I vote on, and two, because even though paper ballots are sitting right there waiting to be hand counted, the Democrats just rolled over and let the issue go.

I don't even care so much whether the election is overturned or not. But doesn't it seem as if SOMEONE should care WHY the machines screwed up? The initial indication that something was wrong was when the tally showed some 7000 votes in Baldwin County for the Libertarian candidate. The election officials knew right away that was wrong, so they ran the ballots through again, and got different totals. These were the numbers released to the press which showed Siegelman (D) ahead, and set the Republicans off screaming.

During the wee hours of the morning, a third count was allegedly done. No one knows the particulars of this count, because it was done after the observers had gone home. It was not a hand count, because Baldwin is a big county, and there wasn't time. Did they run the ballots through the machines again, and get yet a third different number? Don't know, but if they did, shouldn't someone be asking why three different scans got three widely differing vote totals? Or, did they not re-scan the ballots, but just re-tabulate the totals from the individual machines, also getting different totals? Wouldn't you think election officials would want to know why and how that happened?

They didn't. Neither did the Democrats. There was a lot of time spent yelling about the vote count that was done after observers left, but there was very little in the news about the very real problem this event raised. Practically the entire state of Alabama votes on these machines and election officals blithely "explained" the problem by saying there was a "glitch in the software". Excuse me? If a "glitch" in Baldwin County can shift almost 7000 votes around TWICE, and no one bothers to find out why, how can I know my vote in Jefferson County got counted?

As far as I can tell, no one in Alabama cares.

31. Yep.
The sheriff of Baldwin County, I believe. Promised to protect the "integrity" of the ballots.

Also, the Alabama Attorney General (Pryor) quickly delivered an opinion that the sealed ballot boxes could not be opened and recounted by hand. It was a good day's work for him. He was quickly rewarded by Bush* with a nomination to a federal judgeship.

By the way, I'm certain Diebold Election Systems President Bob Urosevich meant those words in a good way. He wants a thorough and independent investigation of his company, and these strong words were his promise to send flowers, and even offers of employment, to investigators who refuse to "back off."

Right?

51. Texas Address
...that's 'cuz switchboard.com has them listed as
Diebold Electron Systems
1611 Wilmeth Rd
Mc Kinney, TX 75069-8250
Phone: (972)542-6000
My guess is that whomsoever prepared the database that switchboard used, did it with a scanner and a telephone book, from which they captured existing data.

Electron vs Election
... is a classic example of a common failure in scanning/character-recognition systems. (which happens to be my area of expertise)

In this case the answer 'Electron' is quite valid, but it is not as the originator intended. Without proper validation against the paper original, the result is wrong.

Hmmm.....why does this so like a familiar theme?
HG
