Whats up with the AARP commercial I keep seeing....
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 03:20 AM by FDRrocks
The basic gist of the commercial is that the new blll 'isn't perfect' but 'millions of americans need action now' so 'we support it'.

I've seen much backlash towards this... so I ask (since Im young) what is is all about? Is the AARP being truthful in saying it is urgent to millions of Americans? Are seniors really shut out? WTF does AARP stand for?

Inform the uninformed, please. Thanks

1. quick answer to your last question
from their website:
"Q: What does the acronym AARP mean?
A: AARP was formerly known as the "American Association of Retired Persons." In November 1998 the Board of Directors changed the name to "AARP." Visit About AARP for more"

the other questions have slightly more complex answers.

2. The head of AARP is a Newt Gingrich fan
My understanding is there is a massive backlash happening including a lot of people revolting/leaving.

The bill has been called the "Dismantle Medicare" bill.

My understanding is the better name is "Privatization Never works but we are trying it again"

3. American Association of Retired People
The way the Bill is structured, 61% of the funding will go to the drug companies with cuts in other areas like surgery and Doctor's visits. Also, AARP is fundamentally an insurance company and would be allowed to compete in that industry plus be able to run an on-line pharmacy for members.

The director is also a Rethuglican shill and wrote the preface for Gingrich's book adding another conflict of interest.

5. Another note
the fellow doing the voice over in the ad does a lot of work for the repugs. I'm sorry but I can't remember his name.

8. AARP must be feeling some heat
To even mention the fact that the bill isn't "perfect." (Nice little understatement there!)

I am waiting breathlessly for the next piece of mail I get that wants me to join AARP. I will reply with basically the same message (perhaps a tad nastier) that I gave to the DNC when it came trolling for a contribution:

Grow a spine and you might get some money from me!

WORTHLESS fuckers all.

:freak:
