Poll question: How do your famliy's political views compare to your own? |
|
My whole family (without exception) is fairly hard-line Repub. I'm something of a blacksheep in that respect. That being said, I'm just about the only one that really pays attention.
Sadly, there is a prevailing sentiment in my family that Democrats "give too much away to the Blacks". Actual quote, there..:eyes:
How do your families compare to your views?

But he's sorry now and won't make that mistake again. When I told his father what he had done, the "old man" was shocked. That sure made me smile...
I'm proud to say that I have raised two intellegent, socially concious, Democrat (if not progressive) children.

4. Didn't see an option on there that fit the description.... |
|
My immediate family (parents, brother, etc.) are all left leaning but centrist, moderate, and not overly political beyond voting for a democrat most elections. They don't disagree with me on many things but get turned off sometimes and annoyed by my dogmatic passion.
My wife and I agree on 99.9% of all political issues. But again she agrees with me but doesn't share my obsessions over the issues.
My in-laws are pretty moderate as well but my father-in-law is one of these "I hate all politicians and political parties equally" but who seems to only complain about democratic ones. Position-wise though I don't think he's really too extremist or conservative. Maybe slightly right leaning but that is it.

6. Sister & Bro-in-law- True Republican |
|
That's not to say they're neo-cons, but VERY right on economic issues. Of course, they are pretty well off. (Bush)
Dad & Stepmom - Dems, but open to either side. Dad's a bit more liberal on social issues than Stepmom. (Kerry or Clark, possibly Dean)
Stepdad - Dem, and proud of it! (Kucinich or Dean)
Mom - The only one in the family farther to the left (ideally) than me. (Kucinich)
(You'll note I put their probable candidate of choice in parentheses.)

9. conservative parents, liberal children |
|
my parents are financially conservative, socially liberal Republicans. every election year my father and I try to swing mom's vote. I won during the Clinton years, dad won during the Bush terms. I actually feel quite sorry for her. bottom line: I am not willing to overlook social concerns for financial benefit and it bothers me that members of my family do. My greatest fear is that my future kids will turn Republican!

10. My hubby and I and our daughters are very liberal; my parents are |
|
socially very liberal on most issues, although they struggle with some (abortion in particular - they support choice but reluctantly, if you know what I mean) but very supportive of equal rights/civil rights, social justice issues, etc. My only brother, on the other hand, is WAY to the right on most issues, bitches about paying more in taxes than most folks make in a year - he just can't look at what he has and be happy; it's never enough and the rich are getting just screwed in his opinion. He did, however, get REALLY involved in the Amina Lawal thing though, calling and writing his representatives and talking to people about that issue, so I think there is a heart in there somewhere...he just really really likes money.

13. My brother and sister are comfortably liberal. |
|
My mother, who is a teacher, is also a liberal, although she has trouble admitting it. She's the way I used to be; calling herself a moderate in order to avoid the "L" word that the Repukes have dragged through the mud with their filthy lies.
My father has always been a solid centrist, but as he enters his dotage, he's pulling to the right. He's started uttering anti-gay remarks that don't sit well with me or the rest of my family. If one of us was gay, I wonder what his reaction would be?
My in-laws: So far to the right, they're about to fall off. 'Nuff said.

If there weren't such a strong family resemblance, I'd swear I was adopted.
My sister runs a Republican PAC, as does her new hubby. My dad's Libertarian, and my mom is Republican.
We're are fairly political family, so family dinners totally suck for me. Three against one is difficult to win. :-(

22. They're all hard-right repukes |
|
Political talk is a no-no around me. They may be ultra conservatives, but they are ignorant of the issues, so when I speak up and they have no come back they resort to personal stuff ("you've gained weight" or "you hate America" are favorites). The religious aspect is the big draw for them. Repukes = party of God/money/safety; Dems = Satan/gays/minorities (even though we are minorities -- go figure). :-(

Once came home from college announcing that I was going to register as a Socialist - thought my Dad would blow a gasket!! We settled on Democrat (I was still on the dole at that point).
Dad - Very Conservative & Clinton Hater Mom - Moderate Conservative - More tolerant on social issues Brother #1 - Conservative Moderate - Scientist & Rationalist Brother #2 - Air Force Officer - Conservative, but think harbors doubts. Sister - Not very political, but Raging Freeper husband influences her into thinking conservatively. By nature, she is fairly moderate.
The dogs - Very, very adorable and tolerant. :)

I'm definitely the furthest left and my parents have their generational blinders about gay folks, but they're all good liberals in general. Not easy in Oklahoma.
My in-laws are a different story. It drives some of them batshit that Ms Uly is as liberal as she is.

I'm new to this site but i just couldnt pass up this poll. I used to be a hardcore republican...simply because of the pseudo morality issues. Now that im an avowed agnostic and blinded to the deceitful campaigns waged purely on morals I can look past it all and live up to my full stature as a hard-core liberal. My family, hoever, are still repubs and voted for bush on this issue alone...abortion. Yeah i know i know....anyway. The one good thing is this my roomate here at college is an airforce ROTC clone and as repub as they get...yet through me he has already vowed that he will vote for Clark or Dean.

Mom and Dad are both liberals and detest Bush. Mom's a good feminist and Dad was very active in his teachers' union.
Husband is as leftist as I am, perhaps more so since he met me. He found DU's Idiots first.
In-laws are a mixed bag. Father in law is a gun nut and Repuke. Mother in law pretty moderate, voted for Hillary in NY, but she hates when we discuss politics. Brother in law is a registered Republican, but I think he's changed a bit -- was talking up Dean a year ago. I think he likes the mavericks like Dean and McCain. Grandmother in law is a fundie and thinks Bush is a wonderful God fearing man. :puke:
Most of my friends are liberals or completely apathetic politically.

32. My father is one of my heros, still today.... |
|
My father was a newpaperman when that meanth something. He was a union organizer. I saw him come home from a picket line bleeding. We moved all over the United States as he was hounded from job to job during the 50's.
We went to public schools even when they were not as academically desireable as available private schools. My father said the education available there was not obtainable otherwise; we could alway read books on our own.
When I was court martialed in the early 70's the charges were not what the testimony was about. I was very politically active while on active duty. My dad showed up with the lapel pins for his Navy Crosses, Distinguished Flying Medals and Air Medals and sat quietly on my side of the court room. During a break he was asked if he knew what kind of activity I had been engaged in while in the Navy. He said he not only knew, but he supported it and wanted the judge and jury to know that.
He's 86 now and is fading away. If I can be the feet in the world for his thoughts I can't imagine doing any better.

34. My parents are conservative |
|
My parents are both Catholic, and socially conservative. My dad is a bit more to the right than my mom socially. He listens to right-wing talk radio, donates to Bush, etc. He's also very fiscally conservative. He hates unions, would cross picket lines, etc. I think he'd eliminate all taxes if he could, and just privatize everything. We don't discuss politics, because all we'd do is fight.
My mom, however, is a bit more centrist. OK, she is vehemently anti-choice, but hates the talk radio my Dad listens to and is very pro-union. She won't cross the picket lines in California (where we live), etc. She's also against the war in Iraq, although she wasn't at the beginning.
My younger brother and I are progressive, naturally. So I'd always have an ally in the family discussions. I'm a registered Dem, while I think my brother was a Green until he changed to "decline to state."
My grandparents on both sides were very progressive, too. My mom's dad was a socialist, and very anti-war after he served in WWII.
My husband isn't political at all. He's registered as "decline to state". However, he always votes for the Dems.
