Just saw a television commercial for Salon.com
Guy sitting in a chair in a dark room. His head is actually a small television, and the TV screen has his face. Mild-looking person wearing glasses.

"Did you know that every major TV news station is owned by a huge corporation? That means that every major news station will be voicing the same opinion. That means your opinion will be basically the same as everyone else's. That's good for the big corporations, but not so good for you."

Fade to a white screen, and the words "THINK FOR YOURSELF."

Followed by a logo for Salon.com.

Damned good commercial. It was on A&E.

2. Okay, the first thing I wondered,
Considering almost a year ago Salon was in such dire straits they were about to go under, or so they said ... suppose one of our several moderate to left-wing deep pockets is helping them out? We have a few, and their pockets are pretty deep. That's exactly the kind of thing they can legally do, too.

Of course, if that's not true, it's even better news, in a way -- if Salon is doing well enough now to buy TV ads, it means their fortunes are up.

Either way, it's all good, I guess.

5. Was thinking the same thing
Subscription business model must be working if Salon is able to afford a TV advertising budget.

7. Nah, I'm sure it was my subscription!
Yup, that $25 was the ticket!

(I hope they have found a source of deep pockets... Some good articles have been coming out of Salon. Subscribe DUers if you can...)

4. Of course you're going to get the inevitable responses to this
Saying Salon sucks because they dared to post one or two articles which had something other than a complete left/liberal slant, completely disregarding that it has some of the best writing out there and covers stories consistently and with follow up, that most major outlets don't bother with.

But I guess completely and utter ideological purity is the name of the game.
