Even though the Vietnam era was really bad, I believe.....
we are presently living in the worst era ever where our democratic values are concerned, with the erosion of civil liberties. This is truly the last gasp of America before descending into an Orwellian state of fascism and censorship. I truly believe that the election in 2004 is the last stand against the domination of neoconservative policies on liberalism. If we don't win this election, we are dead. Therefore, do EVERYTHING you can to support your candidates!

1. I agree, and I am 52
We have never seen anything like what a Bush second term would be. The perils of Watergate, Vietnam and Reagan pale in comparison to what this crew has in store for us. Be afraid. Be very afraid. Also be vigilant, resolute and ready to make a stand.

16. I hope I never see the day...
When I have to find out just what I'm "made of'...
If they steal the WH next year, it will be their mandate to steamroll everything we held dear, all in the name of "Homeland Security"....

And the people saw the New Murka and said "BAAAAAAA!"

2. I hate to say it, slink, but I think you're right.
Once, I compared the US right now to the Hitler Bunker in the hours and days after AH bit the big one. It was a frenzied free-for-all of dope, liquor, and sex among the followers of Herr Moustache who no longer had a guidepost.

Looking back at what I just wrote, I realize this may be a really bad analogy, but I can only think of one other one that might be applicable: Cabaret. (Also, a Nazi reference.)

We cling so desparately to our American Idols, and our Average Joes, and our DVD's and our CD's. We're blotting out the horror. We don't want to know when Big Brother will take over and put telescreens in all the homes.

Shoot, I just realized. They might already be there!

8. I agree but
being 55 and living through Vietnam we made a difference before we can do it again. We must show our children what we are made of and what we believe. I want my country back with its constitution intack.

9. if we really want to take this country back
We'll put as much effort and energy into winning back Congress as we will the White House.

Winning congress is arguably more important than capturing the presidency if you want to make real, long-term improvements in this country.

10. And STOP tearing other candidates DOWN.
SOLIDARITY is what takes the battle.

We have seen far too much blood in our party already. It MUST stop. We MUST eventually unite to take the fight to the enemy, therefore this constant bickering MUST CEASE. NOW.

But also a :kick: for a good thread, and I am total agreement, although it may be more a slower descent, Imperial Rome style.

Who will be our Caligula? My money's on "Hunky" Latino Emperor George P. Bush sometime around the 2030s.

Child labor at the turn of the century.
Slavery and segregation.
Indentured servitude at the colonies founding.

18. I don't know. Imagine Howard Dean being assassinated
I know you think the world of him. Imagine the turmoil when Bobby Kennedy was murdered. It was pretty touch and go there with Nixon. Believe me, if the news media hadn't been on our side, our world would be much different now.

And the turmoil of the Civil rights movement. Vietnam era was pretty bad.

At least now we have the internet.

19. Yep
My Dad, who has been known to pull the lever for a few Republicans in his lifetime (though never anyone named Bush, thankfully) said that the current administration is "reminiscent of McCarthyism, with just a touch of Nazism." He lived through both so I'll take his word for it.

20. It's like what RFK, jr.
said in his recent salon article about the US becoming a corporate fascist state..

he even quoted a dictionary definition of fascism describing it as ""the domination of a government by corporations of the political right, combined with bellicose nationalism."
