I spent the day in Tennessee talking about health care--and in particular, the disparities in our health care system. I talked with medical students at Meharry Medical College in Nashville. The truth is that in America, the color of a person's skin still has an effect on the quality of their health care. That is wrong, and it's something we need to change, and we talked about the ways to do it--overhauling our health care system, increasing research on disparities, improving civil rights enforcement, and some other steps.

Affordable Education

Senator Edwards, as a college student, I know the price of higher education is a very important issue for many people, including myself. I am wondering what you, as president, will do to make college more readily available and affordable for students.

Erin, thanks so much for your question about the costs of college. I hear about this everywhere I go. In the last year, we have seen record increases in tuition. It is pricing people out of college--or forcing them to graduate with more debt than they can handle. College has made all the difference in my life--I was the first in my family to go. We need to make it easier to go to college, not harder.

So here's what I would do. First, I'd create a plan I call College for Everyone. If you come to college prepared and work part-time in your first year, I'd pay for your first year tuition at a public university or community college. Second, I'd offer scholarships to young people who go into fields where we have desperate shortages--teachers in rural and urban schools, homeland security, nursing and public health. Third, for everyone, I would offer states help with the fiscal crisis they're facing right now. The biggest reason tuitions are rising is that states have huge deficits, and they're forcing students to pick up the bill. If we relieve that pressure on states, we're going to stop these tuitions from going up. So those are some of my ideas. Study hard and have fun!
