Gavin Newsom's sleazy attacks on Matt Gonzalez
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 05:27 PM by WhoCountsTheVotes
Too bad Gonzalez's staff isn't rich enough to take full time leaves of absence like Newsom and his wealthy cronies can. Is there anything Newsom won't stoop to to attack people who aren't as rich as he is?

1. Who do you think is going to win?
I listen to Bernie sometimes, and it seems like he doesn't like Gonzales. I am not from San Fran, so I don't really know the local politics...but will Gonzalez win?

2. Gonzales
People in San Francisco aren't going to be fooled by a Republican in Dem clothing, like Gavin.

5. Gonzalez's people come off well in this article. I hope this backfires.
It'd be nice if Gonazalez had the money and time for opposition research. Who wants to bet that there are more conflicts of interest in Newsome's staff?

7. SF Mayor
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 10:42 PM by bluestateguy
My only concern with Gonzalez winning will be if he were to use his post to deliver votes to the Green Party nominee for president. As mayor of SF he'd be the highest ranked Green Party elected official, and possibly a presidential candidate. If he's mayor, I hope he realizes the life and death stakes of this presidential election.

9. Don't Let the Greens:
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 11:02 PM by mdguss
Have a Mayor of a major city. He runs for California Governor and then for president--totally wrecking our chances in the next decade. A prominent green in a MUST win state for Democrats will further complicate an already bad situation. Newsom maybe slick, but he can be counted on to help defeat Bush next year.

Who knows what Matt does. I don't feel like finding out if it means four more years of W.

10. Bush Couldn't Carry California If He Married a Kennedy.
He lost by over 1,000,000 votes in this one state. Gonzalez will make a far better mayor.

11. Yeah BUT:
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 11:06 PM by mdguss
There's a Republican (popular too) Governor now. The state isn't doing as well now as it did in 2000. It is losing people. And they're upset.

1,000,000 people have moved out of the state. 54 electoral votes is 1/6 of what you need to win. We shouldn't write it off. And if we end up having to fight for it, we're going to need everybody (especially the Mayor of the largest liberal city in the country) on our side. Is Matt really on our side? He was once a Democrat. He isn't now. Will he come back? Not worth finding out if it means four more years of W.

Vote Newsom, a moderate, but a moderate who opposed the recall, voted for Bustamante and a moderate who is going to work hard for our nominee next year.

13. If Newsom was a moderate, then maybe
He's a Republican, posing as a Dem, and works for the interests of the wealthy. Gonzalez has always been a Democrat at heart.

15. Schwarzenegger
is not "popular". I've yet to see the first approval ratings, but I doubt they'll be all that high, probably similar to Bush's after Election 2000 (before 9/11), low 50s.

When he starts axing the budget, his numbers will drop. I think he'll be sitting in the 30s next year come election time, and he may be the subject of a recall vote himself.

the problems in CA are real and they're caused by an ideologically driven Republican minority that wants to kill government, ala Grover Norquist.

17. Why do you refer to Schwarzenegger as "popular"
only Republicans and media think Schwarzy is "popular"

Frankly, if he keeps going like he's going, he'll be recalled in about 2 weeks.

In a Democratic state, no less. That's not a sign of popularity? :eyes:
