I just had a conversation with Wes Clark!
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 06:26 PM by Bleachers7
I as many of you know live in NY. I work less than a block away from Letterman's studio. Clark was interviewed on there. It will be shown tonight. There were about 100 of us (supporters) there outside. Clark came out of the studio just after the fans did. He had a scheduled interview in the street with MTV. So after that...

Clark was shaking hands with guests and supporters outside. He looked good. Smart, confident, and friendly as usual. When I shook his hand I said "You kicked butt on Fox." (I didn't say ass to the potential next president.) He said thanks. Then he stopped, turned to me and said: "You know that was something. That guy tried to twist my words. When they try to smear you, you have to go right at it or it spreads." Someone asked him about Russert. He said that was different and that stuff was out there. He had to answer it.

We asked some of the crowd what they thought. There were overwhelmingly good reviews. A few people said things like:

He did great.
I think he's the one I support.
I wasn't sure before, but...
He gave great answers to X question.

There was one couple that were Bush supporters. The woman said that he did well but he should support our president. Some fellow Clarkies talked to them about that. So that's my report. Try to catch it tonight. Dave talks to him about Character and integrity, the environment, gay marriage, Iraq and some other issues. I was not in the studio. That was from my exit interviews. Clarkies and peace loving people, I think tonight was another good night.

Note: DUer Robbedvoter was also there.

Wow, you did great. How cool too?! He was just chompin' at the bit to talk about that faux interview wasn't he? How funny.

To the Bush couple: The man's running for president, why should he support him? My god, should NO ONE run in 04? I mean, this is like the foundation of our system!!! What the FUCK?

8. Yeah, the way they think is amazing, isn't it?
You should always support our President = everyone should always support the President EXCEPT when said President happens to be a Democrat. Then, and only then, is is OK to not fully support him. But when the President is a Republican, it should be against the law to not support him, especially when he's dragged the country into a war, in which case those who refuse to wholeheartedly support him should be charged with treason. WTF?
One of the very first things Hitler did when Hindenburg died was to make people swear allegiance not to the laws or the German constitution or state, but to HIM. Hindenburg's body was barely cold when Hitler pulled this one out of his filthy hat. A lot of freepers would be just fine with this sort of thing as well, as long as it's their boy we're forced to swear allegiance to.

...which it indeed IS.

"When they try to smear you, you have to go right at it or it spreads."

Clark will be a capable leader on the foreign and the domestic war front.

16. I'm such a moran... I mean a moroon... I mean, well...
I've shaken his hand twice (on the same day, two different ropelines), but all I could say was "Thank you." Admittedly, it was when he had laryngitis, and wasn't supposed to talk, but you'd think I could have come up with something a bit more substantive than "Thank you."

But OH MY GOSH, he's stunning in person. Those eyes and that smile... He's got a GREAT handshake, of course, and such unbelievable eye contact (two scales by which I judge a person's character, by the way).

Bleachers, that's so awesome, and thanks for posting your narrative. I can't WAIT for Letterman tonight! YEEEHAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

26. It's so hard to meet someone like that and sound coherant Vote_Clark_In_WI
Last night Conan and Elvis Costello were talking
about that. Conan was saying he'll have all these
great comments in his head then choke and squeal
something like "I like cheese!"

Choke city.
It came up 'cause Elvis once met Bob Dylan
sort of abruptly and Dylan said (albeit thinking
he was someone else...anyways) "I've heard a lot
about you." And Elvis just blurted out "I've heard
a lot about you too." Er. Been kicking himself ever
since.

*ROTFL* Trust me he's heard a lot worse!

He really is a terrific man, and usually pretty quick to catch on to BS. I've concluded he's my number 2 if I have to have one. How's that for a strange decision from a Kucinich supporter?! I keep hoping Kucinich will talk to him more and decide he likes him in spite of his military background. LOL

32. Actually, it's not....
When you look at the other candidates. Clark is actually more liberal then what he is perceived to be. Perfect for the General Election....to be perceived as moderate, yet the platform being good progressive policies.....

Unlike others I know that are perceived as Liberal, but really isn't.

41. Whoah- share, where is he (DK) moderate? LOL
Seriously, I can't think of any issues he's moderate on.

Even so, I definitely agree Clark is far more liberal than most give him credit for. Since someone tipped me off where and when I knew him from, I recalled a lot of the things he said and did back then. (Ft. Hood during the Waco incident)

I must be getting old because I kept seeing him on CNN doing the war commentary and thinking "Dammit, I KNOW that guy from somewhere!". Anyway I keep telling people Clark is a damned good candidate and pretty liberal. Most of them look at me funny. LOL

Clark and Kucinich are very close to eachother politically. Someone did a breakdown here and it was a shock to see how close they were. You need a number 2 if you live in a state that votes after Feb 3. You do not if you live in a state that votes before.

47. Nothing is going through their minds, that;s the problem.
I work with almost all repigs, some days it is pure hell around here, but thanks to DU I am 99% of the times light years ahead of them factually. Earlier this week the talk was about poor Rush and the possibility(hah, their words, not mind) of him money laundering.

I said he should already be in jail for buying drugs illegally. They all ganged up on me like the dittoheads they are, but by the time we were through they admitted the hypocrisy of the Clinton, Monica affair which was not illegal versus breaking a law. Of course one of them had to bring up Clinton, he wouldn't be a dittohead if he didn't, but the point is, they finally saw a wee bit of light by THINKING independently of what Rush and the media told them.

It will be a glorious day when Rush is off the air.

A bit off topic but thanks for the post, I really like Clark and think he would do a nice job in rebuilding alliances that this administration has squandered.
