To the people in Penn, why do the voters continually

send Santorum to the Senate? Is it because he strikes a type of machismo or something? I mean, there is the city of Philidelphia. Wouldn't that be enough votes to get him out?

1. It's simple

We're assholes.

Each and every one of us.

OK, I'll admit -- there are a few cool Pennsylvanians. But the vast majority of us are, indeed, assholes.

but you are right the majority around where I live our a**holes, because they have been fed so much bull. This area is very conservative and we have at least 12 churches in a town of a population of less then 10,000. So what more could you expect. As far as Santorum goes I think in the next election he'll be toast. We now have a dem for governor and even though he is taking some heat because of some of his fiscal policies he has had to put in place (Ridge practically bankrupted the state, worst governor since Thornburgh) I feel he will be a great help.

2. If the Dem statewide candidates in PENN don't buy off the Dem machines

in Phillie and Pittsburgh, the ward leaders and committee people there won't get out the vote for them, and if the Republican candidate is well funded enough to pay off the Dem. ward leaders/committee men and women, these "Democrats" will actually stand at the polling places handing out guideline ballots with the Republican's name included among the local Dem. candidates.

Many of the Dem. committee people are in their 60's & 70's and should have stepped aside long ago for the following two generations, but refuse to give up their little bit of personal power.

So between these hacks, the vast amounts of Republican campaign money, and the GOP media advertising blitz, Pennsylvania remains in Senatorial hell with Santorum & Specter.

3. he is catholic

he gets the anti abortion vote. The catholic church here has too much political influence. The influence only extends to the abortion issue though, since that is mainly what they preach week after week. The church may officially be against the war and against the death penalty, but try getting votes on those issues.... no one is talking about those things in church. However, week after week they offer up prayers for the murdered unborn babies.

5. Not really the case, Ridge was pro-choice

Rendell is pro-choice and so is Specter...so that argument doesn't hold up much.
Santorum didn't win by much last time...I worked both Gore and Klink campaigns...the DNC gave NO money to help Klink out...the margin of votes was such that we could have had that seat. I blame the state Dems and the DNC for not helping enough....

although Klink was a conservative Dem he would have been a hell of a lot better...

6. He got voted in because he had more money and the Dem

base was getting lazy. Rendell is turning things around here in PA but back in 2000 when pRick got elected we were still in a shambles. In fact if not for grassroots activism the state wouldn't have gone to Al Gore...I don't give the DNC much credit for the Gore victory in PA...

Santorum first one by running a dirty campaign.
He won the second time because he dredged up old news and presented himself as elder-friendly... and his opponent didn't have as much money to fight back.

I think we will have a great candidate to run against him in 2006 but right now I am staying quiet until that time comes...
