"G.O.P. to Run an Ad for Bush on Terror Issue
By JIM RUTENBERG

Published: November 21, 2003

WASHINGTON, Nov. 20 — After months of sustained attacks against President Bush in Democratic primary debates and commercials, the Republican Party is responding this week with its first advertisement of the presidential race, portraying Mr. Bush as fighting terrorism while his potential challengers try to undermine him with their sniping.

The new commercial gives the first hint of the themes Mr. Bush's campaign is likely to press in its early days. It shows Mr. Bush, during the last State of the Union address, warning of continued threats to the nation: "Our war against terror is a contest of will, in which perseverance is power," he says after the screen flashes the words, "Some are now attacking the president for attacking the terrorists."...

The Republicans have millions to spend on stuff like this. All comments welcome. My own is, this is a strong reason why I am backing General Clark. He knows how to handle attacks like this, and looks great throwing it back at them. The Times also has coverage of Clark's policy speech to the Council on Foreign Relations where he presents serious alternatives to Bush's misguided efforts to fight terror. (Here's that link: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/21/politics/campaigns/21CAMP.html )

We need someone like Clark right now.

2. I saw Clark on David Letterman last night.
I seldom watch TV, so this is the first live views I've seen of any of the candidates. I thought Clark came across as a little bit phony, but not enough to make a really big impression. He struck me as a clean cut guy who wants to make a splash in politics and knows how to play the game - including mincing words when necessary.

I thought Letterman was a little unfair, calling attention to two or three embarrassments - I think he referenced someone who had said Clark lacked character, and he suggested that Clark had waffled on his Gulf War stance. I wished Lettermand had dumped on Bush more.

Based on my incomplete knowledge of the candidates, Kucinich is my favorite. But I'd like to see him accompanied by either Howard Dean or Clark. It's a tough choice - Dean cuts a powerful swath, but Clark has the military credentials to shoot down Bush's phony war against terrorism.

I wish Lieberman and Gephardt would crawl into a hole with Dick Cheney.
