Al-Qaeda's targeting of Muslim nations
How much will this damage Al-Qaeda's appeal in the Muslim world?

2. .. continued
muslims despise Al Quaeda for their perversion of the religion. Terrorists are terrorists, muslims are muslims, I think that distinction should be made even if I am disappointed in having to make it.

3. How will Muslim fundies react?
Edited on Fri Nov-21-03 04:33 PM by _Jumper_
A subtantial share of the Muslim fundie population used to sympathize with Al-Qaeda.

A poll conducted in several Middle East nations last year found that a subtantial percentage of Muslims supported the 9/11 attacks. I believe that number was around 1/3.

7. Did he act in the name of his religion?
Many Muslims believe Al-Qaeda is fighting for Islam; McVeigh was a racist anti-government terrorist. He had nothing to do with religion.

8. Al-Qaeda is fighting for Islam?
I thought it was because they hated the US government. Just like McVeigh.

11. 9-11 terrorists were muslim- ergo...
the 9-11 terrorists did it because they were fighting for Islam.

That's what a lot of people believe.

Tim McVeigh was a christian, therefore McVeigh did it because he was fighting for christianity.

Following the same logic.

13. No
"9-11 terrorists were muslim- ergo..."

"the 9-11 terrorists did it because they were fighting for Islam."

No, many Muslims, and probably most Muslim fundies, believe 9/11 was an attack for Islam because they believe Al-Qaeda is fighting for Islam against an entity they deem ant-Islam.

4. sorry, again continued... ( keyboard errors Id10T)
Its unfortunate that the notion that muslims support al quaeda still persists. 99.99% do NOT! Im sad to have to restate it, especially here.

6. 99.9%?
My family is Muslim. Many Muslims support Al-Qaeda. The vast majority do not support them but they hate Israel more than Al-Qaeda.

10. many yes, 99% was a guess
but with 1 billion muslims out there, i doubt that al quaeda's following is exceeding the 1% range. I think most muslims would agree that the "hate" you talk about is not answered by terrorism. Much like the "hate" felt for bush and co, the hate towards israel is probably not supported by terrorist acts. Just a thought.

12. A subtantial share supported 9/11
It is very likely that most support Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

Many sympathize with Al-Qaeda; most probably sympathize with Palestinian terrorists.

17. not much..
Definately not in the case of Saudi Arabia, is there anyone on the planet that really likes the House of Saud?

Turkey is hated in the Muslim Arab world for reasons that date back to the Ottoman Empire and the targets were British (also reviled for trying to pick up where the Ottoman left off).

I don't think "support" is the right word for what there is out there for the most part. I don't think very many people would want to send money to him and damn few would want to die for Hussamah. I think when people say they support what they really mean is understand where the rage came from.

18. Sympathize is a more accurate word
Innocent Muslims are being killed in these attacks, though. Surely some Muslims will change their minds because their "brothers and sisters" are being killed instead of the "infidels."
Will it cause a sea change and drain the swamps that Al-Qaeda recrutis from, though?

19. like I said...
many in the middle east don't believe these attacks were by al-Qaida but by the CIA or Mossad, just as many think 9/11 was by Mossad. They look at the terrorist attacks that hurt Muslims and see that these attacks don't benefit al-Qaida but would benefit America and Israel by driving the countries into their camp. Right or wrong this is how many in the middle east look at these attacks.

21. Not al all
Muslims seem to revel in the violence and have for 1000 years.

The murder and mayhem allows them to focus on something else in their life, other than the day to day existance.

War is ingrained into to their pysche and is as normal to them, as baseball is us.
