Anybody here ever been to their state party's convention? I registered as a delegate to the Florida Democratic convention, which is being held next month. Originally, we were planning a straw poll, but because of DNC pressure the state party stepped down.
I was wondering what exactly goes on at conventions. I haven't been to one of them before. I heard it was more of a friendly gathering where Democrats get together to discuss strategy and raise money for the next cycle.
Last year, the FL convention was notable because Gore came out of hiding and gave his first speech. We have all the Presidential candidates here this time, but it won't be as memorable as the 2002 convention.

Pretty disappointing.
Do it once to say you've done it.
All decisions are made in advance above the delegate pay levels. The parties don't want any divisions which will be blown up in the newspapers, so the delegates are basically paying a lot of money to be part of a cheering audience.
You'll get a chance to meet people and maybe even get a few conversations, but mostly even then, you'll wait in line to say a few words, and then it will be the next person's turn.
The best part is usually the exhibit area where you can go during the boring speeches and buy donkey regalia and bumper stickers. You can also talk to the representatives of some of the more fun fringe groups who will have exhibit boothes. They can be interesting.
