If my Kids were about to be drafted I'd ship them out of the Country! |
|
Sure I'd probably get grief from my Boys but I would prevail... As a matter of fact I may start a savings program now, so when the inevitable happens, they'll have plenty of money to live abroad. I have 2 boys,(10 and 6 year old boys) so in 8-10 years we should have a pretty good savings account.
I WILL NOT LET MY KIDS GO TO WAR AND GET KILLED FOR A BUNCH OF FUCKING NEO-CON BUSINESSMAN LOOKING TO MAKE A BUCK OFF THIER LIVES.

1. the trouble is ... will other countries let them stay? |

I feel the same way. But what are the chances they'll be deported back? It seems like Canada has tightened its immigration policies since Vietnam...

6 and 8 years old and I feel as you do. If 2004 gets fixed for chimpass* then my whole family leaves for Mexico or Canada. Hubby used to think I was nuts when I said that. He is taking me very seriously these days.

... and two already live outside the country. We are seriously considering retirement in another country, but are stuck here for five or six years more it seems. If anything changes, though, we're outta here. I feel sad about that because this is a beautiful land and I really do love it, but I'm afraid it's disappearing and no sense hanging on to something that doesn't exist any more, is there?

both liberal and conservative would fight this. I'd be out on the streets protesting and committing peaceful acts of civil disobedience with thousands of other parents. I have a daughter, but I will not see her friends or my nephew shipped off to fight in the Bush Oil Wars. How dare we do this to our youth again. Most of the adults who lived through Viet Nam should know better. Why do the old try so hard to destroy the young--especially those from my generation (I was born in '63)? I know there are many here around my age who don't fit the following observation, but for the most part--from my own experience, I have never met a more selfish, apathetic group of people than those from my own generation. Perhaps it is because many of us were too young to fully comprehend the Viet Nam war.
I am trying to get my mom to understand that if Bush is re-elected, there WILL be a draft, and her grandson will be old enough to get drafted. I am going to drum this in her head until it hurts.

They're not even required to register with the selective service. There is no way that bush will piss off his fundie base by doing that.

so I don't see the risk for them yet.
But my little brother will only be 44 in 2005 when/if they restart the draft. He's also a health care professional and ex-Army (Persian Gulf War I). I'll be talking to him this Thanksgiving about saving up to go away. He's at high risk for having to go back in, even if it is to work in a VA hospital.

16. If they stayed in the country and refused... |
|
What's the worst that could happen to them? If hundreds of thousands of young men refused to go, are there enough jails to hold them all?
Maybe instead of fleeing the country, we should all stay and let the nation witness the spectacle of a government imprisoning all its own young men.

It was early 1971 and I was in 9th grade... He told me that if the war continued he would send me up North... Fortunatly, it ended and so did the draft....I'll never forget that...
Ironically I did enlist 5 years later in the 82nd....
