why everyone in Iraq is getting sick (including our troops)
Edited on Sun Nov-23-03 09:23 AM by Skinner
http://www.csmonitor.com/2003/0515/p01s02-woiq.html

At a roadside produce stand on the outskirts of Baghdad, business is brisk for Latifa Khalaf Hamid. Iraqi drivers pull up and snap up fresh bunches of parsley, mint leaves, dill, and onion stalks.

But Ms. Hamid's stand is just four paces away from a burnt-out Iraqi tank, destroyed by - and contaminated with - controversial American depleted-uranium (DU) bullets. Local children play "throughout the day" on the tank, Hamid says, and on another one across the road.

No one has warned the vendor in the faded, threadbare black gown to keep the toxic and radioactive dust off her produce. The children haven't been told not to play with the radioactive debris. They gather around as a Geiger counter carried by a visiting reporter starts singing when it nears a DU bullet fragment no bigger than a pencil eraser. It registers nearly 1,000 times normal background radiation levels on the digital readout.

-snip-

The Monitor saw only one site where US troops had put up handwritten warnings in Arabic for Iraqis to stay away. There, a 3-foot-long DU dart from a 120 mm tank shell, was found producing radiation at more than 1,300 times background levels. It made the instrument's staccato bursts turn into a steady whine.

9. We liberated them allright. Does bush know of these nuke bullets?
Does the American public who has parroted the phrase of "Liberte Iraq!"

If they do, they deserve no less than what they've allowed to happen in Iraq. Come on karma, bring 'em on.

3. Almost as good as blankets loaded with smallpox.
Liebensraum. A fine Nazi policy meaning kill 'em off and take their land. Not new with them, not even new with Genghis Khan, but still memorable.

We cannot hold the ME if the people who live there are still alive. We can't.

The neocons just don't like to mention why they'll need all those troops.

4. bush really is a sick bastard, as bad as Saddam if not worse
The differences are, bush isn't responding to another country slant-drilling into his oil pocket and that bush has weapons to satisfy his insanity with. x( :scared:

If karma pays the US back with equal measure...

6. Their babies are born with lukemia
this isn't just a little cancer problem. This is an epidemic. Basra has the highest rate of cancer of any city in the world.

I feel sick to my stomach whenever I think about the horrible destruction this war has caused.

8. thanks -- who had and used WMDs?
it really makes one think of who actually had and who actually used so called Weapons Of Mass Destruction?

Does anyone know if 1,000 times or 1.300 times normal background radiation is harmful? It makes it sound harmful, but I've heard some argue that certain levels that sound harmful are not? I don't know, that's why I'm asking
