We must surely give LOTS MORE to corporations than we do needy citizens?!

And would the people listen, many of them STILL think the media is TOO liberal!!

5. Why not respond with...
..."tax cut welfare?" That's what it is. *'s tax cuts simply redistribute income from the future to his buddies to use now. It is *precisely* the same thing.

10. corporate welfare, absolutely
I just now had an e-mail fight with an ex-boyfriend who used to be a very nice liberal NY Jewish attorney and is now a right-wing radio talk show host.

When I complained about the outcome of DeLay's stalling tactics on the Medicare bill that I stayed up all night watching, my "friend" responded by saying, "Socialism never worked. It's not going to work now."

I fired back by pointing out that both the Medicare and energy bills are full of corporate welfare. For example, why do the age-old coal and oil industries need influxes of taxpayer capital to keep doing what they have always been doing? "Capitalism for the poor; socialism for the rich," I said.

If anyone has some better lines for me to fire back with, please let me know, as this is sure to be a long and bitter battle.

thanks,
s_m

12. Medicare never worked?
What rock has this ex-boyfriend been living under? (Good thing you dumped him, bTW)

Of course it "worked"! Geeeeeeeeeeeeez, it's so amazing that all these younguns have no concept of how many people suffered and died early because there was no "safety net". Yup, we definitely need some "before" and "after" stories!

Not to mention that all the other "civilized" countries have *lots* more socialism, and they survive much better.

My personal fave in the "corporate welfare" arena (pun intended) are all the sports stadiums built with taxpayer money. Those poor millionaire sports figures sure do deserve those subsidies!

I guess if you get paid for just talking into a mike you can say anything, whether it's true or not.

Gak.

16. Thanks for the thoughts
I guess it's "easy" for him to disparage individuals who must rely on Great Society programs in retirement, since he is getting paid vulgar amounts of money to spew venom on talk radio. If he lives to retirement age, he won't have to worry about money, just love.

What is ironic to me, is that the people that call in to his show are almost always males who dont' seem to be higher than middle class by any means, yet they worship at the Bush throne. They seem to think Bush is one of them.

I guess I can understand where my ex-boyfriend is coming from, inasmuch as he is raking in bucks with his hypocrisy, if he can live with himself (heh heh, no one else will).

You're right; I'm glad I dumped the selfish ass. Still, it bugs me that he is out there influencing others to become anti-Democrats.

14. Kerry Will Slash Corporate Welfare To Pieces
"We must also take a hard look at federal spending. We simply can’t afford to keep wasting money on the wrong things.

It won’t be easy. The special interests will stop at nothing to keep their special deals. That’s why I’ve joined John McCain in calling for a “Corporate Subsidy Reform Commission” modeled after the military base-closing commission. A bipartisan group would recommend corporate subsidies to be eliminated and Congress would have to vote up or down on the entire package."

http://www.johnkerry.com/pressroom/speeches/spc_2002_1203.html

No amendments can be added to the package. It would just be each memer of Congress's reputation on the line: are you for or against wasteful programs that steal revenue from education and health care?

15. How about "Farmer Welfare"?
I was crewing a video production of a panel the other night, and one of the sticking points with the panel was how the small "hobby" farmer qualified for a better subsidy package than the "Professional, I don't drive a school bus and my wife is not a NP in town to make ends meet" farmer...

All these guys on the panel wanted MORE subisidy (welfare) and one even went so far as to state that he would not trade with a tractor dealer or seed dealer who farmed "on the side" because that was "giving money to my COMPETITION"

And I'll bet ALL these guys voted for Shrub, and they go "AMEN! MEGA-DITTOS!" when the Oxy Kid goes off about "welfare brood sows"....

It was surreal...

19. I know, and it's bad in more ways than one
First, we're screwing third world countries by these huge ag subsidies. Second, this ethanol grab in the energy bill is enough to make me lose my appetite for martinis.

It's as if all these "members" care only about re-election, nothing else.

That plays into the neocons hands, of course, because it keeps the Congress busy with their "small" issues while they themselves proceed with world dominination.

If I wrote that in the local newspaper, I'd be declared a traitor.
