Leonardo DiCaprio narrates film about global warming to kick off campaign
Leonardo DiCaprio Shows His Green Side
Starring In Conservationist Film About Global Warming

LOS ANGELES (AP) Leonardo DiCaprio is using his fame to call on elected officials to reduce American dependence on oil and slow down global warming.

The 29-year-old actor and conservationist is appearing in a short film called "Global Warning" as part of an Internet campaign organized by Global Green USA, an affiliate of Green Cross International.
<snip>

"We must demand a separation between oil and state," he said. "We can vote for leaders who care about protecting your health, the air and the environment."

What do you think of this campaign? Do you think it is effective for celebrities to engage in campaigns such as this? What did you think of the movie?

1. celebrities should be allowed to speak in public.......
Edited on Sun Nov-23-03 10:40 AM by buycitgo
only if they toe the republican line

Hatch is working on an amendment to his proposed constitutional amendment allowing ahnold to run for president that makes it illegal for liberal/democratic celebrities to speak in public on any subject other than their personal/entertaiment involvements

2. hmmm. You realize that is an outrageous idea, don't you.
I doubt it is true as you state it. You need to provide a link.

6. not only that, but......
"Merv Griffin today announced that CBS has just started production on a new miniseries, 'The Clintons'. “We’ve got (former special prosecutor) Ken Starr producing. Ooooohhhhhhhhh. Nobody knows the Clintons like Mr. Starr.”

“Unlike ‘The Reagans’ (which CBS was forced to switch to a lesser-seen network for fear of offending several extremely wealthy people), ‘The Clintons’ will be a ‘fair and balanced’ look at the worst President America has ever been disgraced by,” said Griffin.

Producer Ken Starr added, “Most miniseries would just concentrate on Bill’s philandering and his impeachment, but we’re showing the other side, too. For instance, Hillary’s lesbian lifestyle, and the various murders committed by the couple. I predict that the scene that shows Hillary offing Vince Foster will win actress Sandra Bernhard (who portrays Ms. Clinton) the Emmy.”

9. He admitted only half it was true
What is true is the amendment allowing non-U.S. citizens to run for president, which would open the door for Arnold to run. The rest is just made up.

A little early in the morning for the other rambling and bizarre postings, though.

Does anybody have any comments on the actual issue or the movie?

12. That's OK
If it weren't for the diversion, it looks like I wouldn't have gotten any comments at all. ;-)

It can only help. I think people tend to click on threads with more responses because it shows something is going on or it was interesting enough to bother formulating reply. Besides, each response throws it back to the top. LOL!

16. tell you what
keep guessing

meanwhile, back to the topic at hand.

while I admire diCaprio's efforts/seriousness, a quick look online will demonstrate that he's an object of derision among even MOR pundits, and has been savaged by the wingloons.

they'll be just as vicious toward him as they are toward any LOC celeb who dares to speak out on any issue opposing the entrenched powers that be.

same thing will happen to him that happens to Sarandon, Penn, Robbins, Garafalo, Clennon, Reiner, Streisand. their message is immediately drowned out in the cacophony of ridicule, which always becomes the story. they always end up defending their RIGHT to speak, to be heard, rather than talk about their message, whatever it might be.

contrast it to Schwarzenegger, or Reagan, or Heston, who were given instant cred by the government media. they couldn't wait to salivate over every pearl of wisdom.

especially Reagan.....ever read "On Bended Knee?" that's where the RW hold on the media really was cemented, and the participants willingly submitted to interviews in the book where they concede that Reagan got off pretty much scott-free during his entire regime.

just watch.......if diCaprio's efforts are covered at all, they'll be in terms of his being a bleeding heart pretty boy, undeserving of a platform.

hope I'm wrong, cause the despoliation of the environoment is one of the worst things this junta has done, and that's saying a lot, cause everything they do turns to dross. Everything

19. Thank you for finally addressing the question
I agree that there is a double-standard on celebrities speaking out set by the media and those on the right. However, I think when there is controversy, it draws even more attention to the cause and some who would not have paid attention are exposed to the message simply through the controversy it has engendered.

For example, controversy certainly didn't seem to hurt the Dixie Chicks or Al Franken. In fact, I think both benefitted from the additional publicity and it created some interesting debates on the right to dissent.

Here's an interesting tidbit about DiCaprio, who has been a green advocate for a number of years. He interviewed Clinton for ABC in April 2000 in conjunction with Earth Day. That created a storm of controversy regarding his credentials.

Go figure.

18. good guess, ha
did you see my post, just above yours?

I'm glad you put the movie up here, cause it's important that people wise up, and maybe his audience will be motivated to get out and vote.

the percentage of youngstoids actually voting is very low, am I correct in that, like 33 percent.

if only he could arrange a series of group meetings with hundreds of thousands of young lovelies, and charm them to the ballot box......
