War hero's campaign falters as key staff drift away--The Observer
Edited on Mon Nov-24-03 10:14 AM by Skinner
NO FLAMES PLEASE!! I really like Clark and have been leaning toward him more than any one candidate lately. Clark watchers, what are your insights on all this?? (I hope I haven't put the hex on Clark--just as I start really liking him, kaboom??)

Democrats' general on the retreat

War hero's campaign falters as key staff drift away

Paul Harris in New York
Sunday November 23, 2003
The Observer

When General Wesley Clark entered the race for the US presidency he was hailed as an all-conquering saviour who could provide the magic ingredients to defeat George Bush and capture the White House for the Democrats.

Not any more. As President George W. Bush arrives home from his state visit to Britain, he will have the satisfaction of seeing Clark's campaign in crisis. It is low on funds, has lost key staff and is fizzling out in key battleground states.

Meanwhile, the campaign of Vermont governor Howard Dean has captured the public imagination, securing his place as the frontrunner in the still crowded field of nine Democrat candidates.

'There was tremendous potential in Clark as a candidate, but there have been major problems in the execution,' said John Zogby, head of polling organisation Zogby International which conducted research for Clark supporters before the general's announcement that he was joining the
race.

1. Not a flame
This has been posted a couple of times before. (Yes, I've duped in the past, too.) This story is really a bunch of rehashed material from several weeks ago. The reporter should have shown some inititiative.

Don't worry, you're not jinxing Clark. His campaign seems to be gathering momentum.

3. I don't know how true any of this is....
But I do belive that this could be a brokered convention for the nomination. I like both Dean and Clark. THe fact that they are not going heavy at each other leads me to believe there is a strong possibility of a Dean/Clark or Clark/Dean candidacy.

Clark is late to the game, but his recent appearances seem to be bumping him up. So perhaps it is way too early to discount him. Seems most of the campaigns are in some disarray. in terms of both fundraising and staffing..(Kerry, Clark, in particular).

6. Yes, Dean and Clark seem to treat each other well...if I recall,
weren't they in contact with each other even before Clark declared???

I would vote for Dean, of course, but Clark is showing that he can fight and slap back, but his tone is certainly less "angry" even though he is angry. He has a good way of presenting his rebuttals to bullshit--he does it with a smile, which I think wears very well.

The energy Dean puts out can be tiring...I do wonder how well he would wear with the general electorate....

22. Dean/Clark...
... is our best chance for a slam dunk IMHO. They cover all the bases, and both are young enough (Clark/Dean too) that after 4 or 8 the VP could take the helm.

I've been a Dean supporter for a while, but every time I see Clark on the tube I cannot help but be impressed. This guy is smart, he is unflappable, and he is in possession of the facts.

Yes, it wasn't that long ago that he was talking trash and who can tell if he's had a change of heart or is putting on a facade of convenience. But if it is the latter, the man deserves an Oscar.

4. Vice President Clark
has a fantastic ring to it.

The Democrats, in order to win, need to take every state they won in 2000, plus one more. Why not Arkansas?

Every state plus one and we kick these criminals to the curb. Dean/Clark can and will do that.

14. Gore states + AR means Bush wins, 272 to 266.
Edited on Sun Nov-23-03 10:21 PM by BillyBunter
Of course, Clark would cover for the inept and nasty Dean about as well as Bentsen was able to cover for the inept Dukakis in 1988, so it's all moot anyway. We either present a challenge in several battleground states in 2004, or we lose. Do you think Dean/Clark could challenge in more Southern states than AR, or would a ticket headed by Clark do a better job?

26. Not to me and not to his supporters
What if everytime Kerry was mentioned, the subject seemed to always come up...yeah, let's have a Dean/Kerry ticket...Kerry would make a great Vice President.

There is no way someone with the status of John Kerry would consider a Vice Presidential spot under Howard Dean.

That's the way I feel about Clark. I find it not only premature, but insulting.

5. key staff have joined also
I think the campaign is back on track. This artical is a retread echo of the stuff that was getting a lot of play in the mainstream media here a couple of weeks back. They don't follow Clark's campaign as closely in England. To many readers there it was still newsworthy that Clark hadn't put the nomination in the bag after debuting at number one. This type of publicity was much more dangerous in the good ol' USA when it was rolled out here; that flavor of the month failed candidacy stuff. That dismissal is finally being replaced with the more current "Can anyone catch Dean?" line. Clark's fund raising has picked up, his poll numbers have turned back upwards, he's done a media blitz over the last week, has TV ads up for the first time, he is on the ground running in NH, and he's rapidly improving as a campaigner. He's sure getting taken a lot more seriously on DU over the last two or so weeks. That's an early indicater.

7. Its misleading too
Clark has never said he intended to win New Hampshire-just that he hoped to make a solid showing. The day before the Guardian ran a lengthy article praising Clark...

8. As mentioned before, Zogby is the source for this article...
All of Zogby's polls have been very inconsistent with all of the other pollsters. I have no idea why. But if one poll is inconsistent with 5 other polls, I'm more likely to take a mean of the five and toss out the one to obtain a more reliable result.

9. Hey Wes.....call Howard Dean. We need you!
We need you as the VP. If your campaign is really destined to fizzle out, don't quit. HOOK UP with this guy so we can put our collective foot up Bush's ass next November.

11. THIS IS A DUPE FROM YESTERDAY
The jughead that wrote this article is living in the past. This rehashed garbage was the talk about 1 month ago. Clarks campaign is in stride now his message is getting out and folks are listening.

Its funny when this article ran in the UK, it was timed perfectly with Bush's visit.

23. The only difference was that she didn't have the link yesterday.
Clark has met his fundraising goal for NH.

Clark is doing quite well in all the other polls besides Zogby.

The staffer who left did so ages ago. Very old news.

You are right on target, American Dem: this is rehashed garbage spun to made Numbnuts feel better on his visit to the UK.

Let's not mess with it anymore, okay, Gloria?

There are currently a HUGE number of undecideds. I want to see some voting results. I believe Clark will win over a LOT of the undecideds.

15. Just out of curiosity, do you believe some of
what this person says? Do you believe that Clark is low on money, when he's on track to pull in at least 12.5 million this quarter, and will get millions more through fed matching funds? Do you believe that 'key staffers are drifting away?' If you do, perhaps you can tell us who they are, as the author of the article wasn't so kind as to do that remedial piece of journalism?
