32. Saw him yesterday giving a foreign policy speech
Talked alot, didn't say much.

Saw him on one of the Sunday morning shows where he did a Kerry act trying to explain away what he said then and what he says now.

He talks about getting terrorists and that always makes me nervous. In a Country that turns a blind eye to Israel's state violence, while accusing the Palestinians of blanket terrorism, can't say I have alot of confidence in his military solutions as foreign policy.

67. She's a general's wife. It's a much harder job,
and I'm not kidding. The military has a shadow organization of spouses that works very much like the military itself. The spouses organize and take care of each other and so on when their mates are away; and the responsibilities generally are dependant on the rank of the officer. As a general's wife, Gert would have had to be a heck of a woman -- smart, decisive, organized, a leader, and compassionate. I've liked what I've seen of her so far, but his wife was one area I never worried about; if she wasn't rock-solid, his career would have fizzled -- the role of the military spouse is that important in the military world. This isn't a Betty Ford we're talking about, and neither would it be the early Hillary. She will know how to wield her influence behind the scenes without becoming a lightning rod. I've known two wives of high-ranking military people, and seldom have I envied anyone their choice in spouses like I did those two guys -- their wives were absolute keepers.

82. This will sound possibly shallow
or maybe not since there are a lot of shallow comments on DU, but when I was a military wife ( was only active during Vietnam for a short time thank god) the wives were responsible for a vibrant social life.

They could hold dinners, and dances and events that were flawless.
If nothing else maybe Gert could liven up the social scene at the White House like Jackie did.

84. My experience with Gert
The weekend that Clark groups scheduled the national day of service was the same weekend that General Clark was at home sick.

My daughter and I made our way to Little Rock to volunteer at the cleaning and sprucing up of the Little Rock Boys and Girls Club. We were the first ones there because we live about an hour away and wanted to have plenty of time.

Gert showed up. She rolled up her sleeves and immediately began scrubbing sinks and cleaning out the store room. My daughter worked side by side with her for quite a while. She was gracious and kind and just a great lady.

All in all, it was a great experience and we accomplished a great deal at the club.

54. Clark has "found his message" with his adjournment piece...
I think the message of unity and healing is universal.

I also think it the real core of all his life's efforts.

He is an "American" candidate. I think this would resonate
in the general election in a way that would put him far
above squabling about contemporaneous issues.

I also loved his response on the arts. I think Clark is as
close to a Renaissance Man as we have running.

Man, I am so glad he is running.

It's like...he's an actual whole person.

Then again, his academic achievements are
as impressive as his military achievements.

I wonder how many high ranking military people
have this kind of acedemic record:

"Clark studied at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar from 1966 to 1968, receiving a Masters Degree in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics.
...
From 1971 to 1974, Captain Clark served as an Instructor and Assistant Professor of Social Science at West Point, teaching, among other subjects, political philosophy."

78. Is it my imagination?
Or does Joe L seem completely UNinterested in the things people are talking to him about?

Yikes

90. Lieberman, God Help Me, I LIKED His Ad
:D

Excepting his voice and the fact he looks like an oversized, deranged elf....

59. Does anyone else (besides trolls) think his health care plan is iffy?
I'm for universal health care and I don't like his
band aid approach. I consider it one of his negatives.
Obviously any improvement over the current disgraceful
situation would be a relief. But it doesn't seem
like his plan goes far enough.

66. I think that getting Bush out of our
White House is the best health plan and it goes far enough for me....I don't think that we can realistically think that we're also are going to get just the right plan we all pine for.

Hey, I'm originally from France and we have a good system there. But I'm a pragmatic first of all.

And unless we have a majority in both or at least one house...don't even think that we can have a "universal" anything. Let alone reverse the tax cut to have the money to fund anything.

Yes, a good plan is a great thing....But I'd rather have something than nothing.

70. As a doctor, I like his health care plan...
I believe in National Health Care but I know how the
biz works. Even if National Health Care was passed, it will
take a long time to transform the system.

It has taken years just for the new privacy laws and new transaction
code sets to take effect, even then insurance companies are
still filing for extensions.

National Health Care is a 10 to 15 year goal, not something
you can expect overnight. Getting folks covered and get
rising costs controlled is step 1 and 2.

Clark has consulted with some really knowlegable folks from
U of Michigan (I was told) and I think his plan reflects
smart changes with a focus on screening (something his
competitors don't do as far as I know).

Also, whatever you promise, you gotta pass. I don't see
National Health Care passing anytime soon.

Like I said, I am for it (NHC), but it's not a short term thing.

It is a long term thing.

That's my opinion, anyhow.

89. Thanks Frenchie4Clark, familydoctor, TacticalPeak
That input helps a lot.

They already blocked Clinton's attempt at
national health care, so maybe Clark's version
is more doable.

cf. UHC since Truman.

60. Yeah... But
I like Clark but he seems like he would make a better Vice-President than President. I'm still hoping for Dean/Clark vs. Bush/Cheney. A Doctor and a War Hero vs. a couple of oil tycoons. The GOP wouldn't stand a chance.

63. The GOP would stand a chance
unless we turn that around. Dean is just not presidential, especially when you compare him to Clark.

are you kidding......like Clark wants to be a VP to someone who's gonna lose with a middleclass tax cut being offered to voters.

Nope, Clark does not need Dean.....unless Dean is threatening to take his voters and go home......

We know that Dean needs Clark already....REMEMBER THIS HEADLINE?

I second you on that, I'd much rather see a Clark/Dean ticket than vice versa. I just don't think Dean can generate traction with middle america.

73. He's awesome. Wes and Gert simply glow with joy and energy!
They are a beautiful, loving couple.

Everything The General said resonated to the depths of my being. He KNOWS Iraq was a done deal even before * stole Gore's job. And (reading between the lines) when he follows statements like that with his observation that as soon as 9/11 happened bushies were trying to make an al Qaeda/Hussein link, I believe he suspects * of lihop. Just mho, however.

GO GENERAL CLARK!!!!!!!!! :loveya:

75. Please email CSPAN and
nicely ask them to air Clark's ad. I thought maybe they weren't running it because they had already shown the NH speech but they showed Lieberman's ad and he's on next. In addition, they showed the same ads this morning with out showing Clark's ad.

I don't think it was very fair to Gephardt to show Dean's attack ad without showing Gephardt's response ad.

91. very impressive
i caught the end of Clark's q&a ...

from my vantage point, this was the second consecutive time I gave Clark my "very impressive" rating ... i'm not supporting anyone right now, btw ...

i spent some time this morning thinking about how damaged our fragile democracy has become ... the country has become so polarized that government can no longer function ... two factors contribute to this:
1. an ideological divide among americans and
2. an extremist right-wing agenda being pushed by the GOP

Clark seemed sincere in his commitment to "put the country before party" ... while this might not win him many votes among the most partisan democrats, i think this is not only the right thing to do but i also think it's a political winner in the general (no pun intended) election ...

I think americans see the paralysis in their government ... i think we are not served by having left and right fight to a draw ... this is not to argue for centrist policies, btw ... quite the opposite ... it is only to argue for an independence of mind and an integrity on addressing the issues this country faces ...
