Gang,
What had to have been galling for even the dimmest and most indifferent Americans who bothered to watch even one minute of the orgiastic JFK-Fest on all the major network and cable news outlets this past week, was the inescapable and less-than-life-affirming conclusion about how far we have fallen as a nation.
Bush's trip to England was planned several months in advance, when the "War" was "going well," and Bush's handlers envisioned a huge victory parade in and around London. The Captain has more to say on this particular trip, and the conveeeeenient arrest of Michael Jackson at the start of Bushie's pending PR nightmare, later. But I also have a theory, regardless of how far in advance this trip had been planned...they timed it so Bush would be OUT OF THE COUNTRY during this past week of the much-anticipated media hoopla surrounding the 40th Anniversary of Kennedy's head being blown apart in Dealey Plaza. Captain Mike has a helluva LOT to say on THAT too, later.
But, aside from the timely arrest of Michael Jackson just as the protesters were massing in the streets around Trafalgar Square, I DO think, in a far less sinister - as opposed to just plain practical - PR move, they made sure Bush was NOT AROUND for the week of gushing JFK tributes. I think Karl Rove feared that American's somnambulistic brainwashed view of their stumbling, stammering sock puppet of a President as a "Decisive Leader," and "visionary" and outright "9-11 Hero" would suffer a somewhat lethal blow.
It's been The Captain's contention - and several major psychologist's and political commentators' - that, since 9-11, Americans have been under some sort of all-too-willing media-induced self-hypnosis that has allowed Bush & Co. to continue to get away with the most appalling things, and yet still supposedly poll in numbers above 50%. This sorta thing has been going on for years. I mean look at Reagan, a senile old man that daily told lies to Americans, yet we trusted him, liked him, and were fooled into believing that this doddering old former actor was a "strong leader" and a "visionary." What has been happening in this country reminds me of Albert Brooks' line from BROADCAST NEWS. In context, he's trying to convince Holly Hunter that William Hurt's character, the handsome, bland and appealing Tom, is actually The Devil. "No, when the Devil comes, he won't be OBVIOUS. He'll just slowly, cunningly, and over time, little by little, LOWER OUR STANDARDS!"
Americans have slowly been lulled into this sleep. However, sometimes it can only take one thing, a sight, a sound, a smell, something that will trigger "the patient" to snap out of his sleep after being hypnotized by the psychiatrist, "WAKE NOW!" 9-11 did THAT for me. These guys are masters of psychology and fomenting mass denial. They've succeeded brilliantly, as 2/3 of Americans now think that Saddam's Iraqi's piloted those planes into the Towers.
I honestly think it was Karl Rove's greatest fear, that all it would take would be for millions of TV-addicted "Joe Sixpacks" or "Bubbas" , armed with the remote, and watching any one of those Kennedy tributes, to switch to another channel showing our current Chimp-in-Chief, and be shocked by the juxtaposition. I really believe they were fearful, that with the flicker of a thumb, enough Americans might be jolted, much like the magician's snapping his fingers, into suddenly WAKING UP as to just how AWFUL, MORONIC, SHORT-SIGHTED and EVIL the 43rd President of the United States actually is. Really. We've been conned and lulled and duped by the corporate and White House-controlled mass media into accepting this Bush...THING as our national ideal of what our leader should be.
They've been so cunning at building Bush up, and getting us to EMBRACE this stumblebum, I really think they were fearful that KENNEDY COMPARISONS would damage their little Dauphin's carefully-manipulated image and possibly permanently bring the curtain down. To lift the collective fog from our eyes. "Jesus, THIS is our President NOW?" Or, "(sigh), WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN?"
Think about it. That average American spending what, an average of 20-30 hours a week watching television? 20-30 hours of KENNEDYPALOOZA. Then switching over to watch the day's news. And seeing George W. Bush's smirking, stammering, blinking, deer-in-the-headlights countenance. Pressing that remote. Back and forth. KENNEDY. bush. KENNEDY. bush. KENNEDY. bush. KENNEDY. bush.
This has been the most stage-managed Presidency in US History. This has been the most propagandized leadership in World History, second only to, or perhaps even surpassing that of, Adolf Hitler's.
I know the England trip was planned far in advance. But they wanted this guy not only outta the country THIS PARTICULAR WEEK, but hopefully looking "Statesmanlike" by holding photo ops with the Queen of England, and by comparison, looking manly next to that girlish poodle, Tony Blair.
JFK supposedly read several newspaper each morning BEFORE he had his Cabinet meetings. He had almost perfect total recall of all the news he read. We now have a President who proudly states that he never reads newspapers, that he relies upon his staff to tell him what's going on in the world. Oh, and he also insists that God tells him to do things, like "strike at Saddam, so I did."
This is the President that we Americans have now...
