1968 RFK Interview on Discovery Times Channel NOW (10:00AM CST)
It's a one-on-one with David Frost.

What a poignant picture of what might have been.

1. Some quotes
"You want to know that there's someone (in the White House) looking out for your interests and the interests of the nation and the interests of the future."

"It wasn't just him (JFK) who made those years (1960-63) so special, but all those young people who were inspired"

All in all, he's not a glib or witty interviewee, but a very thoughtful one.

2. I wonder if he would be considered electable today
Too thoughtful, a bit inarticulate in interviews, although pleasant and low-key. Not the firebrand we remember from the speeches.

3. "What is leadership?"
"Inpiring people to exercise their best qualities."

Quotes Camus on patriotism, "I want to love my country in justice."

4. On Communism
"Terrible in some parts of the world, but in other countries, no worse than some of our allies."

"What historical character do you most admire?"

"From the political point of view, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover in his humanitarian role as opposed to his presidential role."

5. "How would you like to be remembered?"
Quotes Camus again. "I would like to feel that I've done something to lessen suffering."

"What is most Americans' main fear? Main hope?"

"Their main hope is for national purpose. That sounds general, but it's a hope for a recapturing of the purpose and direction of the country, and an end to divisions. Restore the soul of the country." The main fear: "That we won't. People feel lost and their sense of action is gone. We have this tremendous wealth, but what does it all mean now that we have it, with bitterness between parents and children and between the races?"

"What went wrong with the Great Society?"

"A lot of the programs that were started couldn't be funded because fo the war. "

6. "I think that we've lost our way and need to turn a corner."
Since I never saw this interview back when it was first broadcast and saw only the crowd-pleasing speeches, I'm surprised at how inarticulate (although not in a stupid way, like Bushboy) in this situation.

7. Asked about his children
"I hope that they will grow up to realize that they should give something to the world and not just turn in on themselves."

"What would you do if you weren't in politics?"

"Teaching and writing."

"The U.S. ten years from now?"

"Cut down the reliance on nuclear weapons, help the undeveloped nations of the world, establish a system in our country so that even the very poor can educated their children, find decent jobs, and not lose hope...If we don't start trying in 1969, we're going to run out of time."

11. I got to see the last 10 minutes of this
Frost says some very nice things about Bobby at the end. Whenever I see RFK it makes me sad for what might have been....
