Bake sale takes aim at A&M's diversity official

Other groups planning to stage counter-protest

COLLEGE STATION -- A conservative student group plans to hold a controversial "affirmative action" bake sale where cookie prices will be based on a buyer's gender and race to protest today's arrival of a new diversity leader at Texas A&M University.

At the sale, white males must pay $1 for a cookie while the same kind of cookie will be sold to white females for 75 cents, to Hispanics for 50 cents and to African-Americans for 25 cents.

Matthew Maddox, chairman of the Young Conservatives of Texas A&M, said the bake sale is being held to protest the creation of the new position of vice president of institutional assessment and diversity at A&M in College Station.

James A. Anderson, the former vice provost for undergraduate affairs at North Carolina State University, will assume the new post today.

Speaking as a white female, if I had the misfortune to be there, I'd be more than happy to give someone else my place. These people sound like a bunch of idiots!!!

1. Thing is
if the price were based on the average salary of each group they would come out about the same as these prices. Perhaps some liberal group ought to have a bake sale and illustrate that by charging by percentile of salary rather than a set amount.

2. Buy!
I'd give money to some of my African-American friends and get them to buy a bunch of cookies. When I was in college, food was a prime directive. As long as they're dumb enough to sell them for 25 cents.........

3. always need to be the victim ....
this describes most of those idiots:

The niche is disappointed people, mostly men. Andrew Kohut, the highly regarded pollster for Times-Mirror, has described "the typical Limbaugh listener" as a "white male, suburbanite, conservative better-than-average job but not really a great job. Frustrated with the system, with the way the world of Washington works. Frustrated by cultural change. Maybe threatened by women."

Somebody, in short, who is not as rich, powerful or famous as he thinks he should be, and who wants to blame outside forces. The talk-show hosts help. They blame cultural (but rarely economic) elites and the government for the world's ills and regularly reinforce the listener's sense of being scorned and ridiculed.

or someone similar did this once before. Maybe 6 months ago. Went over like a lead balloon. It might have been at another university.
After an hour or so, they were asked to leave, but they got good exposure. Several members were interviewed by the press.

update:ok, so I went back and read the article again. It's only been 2 months.

6. Much as I hate to admit it, they have a really effective tool here.
Edited on Mon Nov-24-03 02:22 PM by redqueen
And they're using it, successfully.

Dean I think tried to defuse it but I don't know how effectively... won't unless he gets the nod.

Anyway the thing is these people basically look at this situation and see it as a constitutional law that's being ignored to their detriment. No matter how groundless we think that sentiment is that's what they think. And as long as they can point to that and say 'two wrongs don't make a right', they have a big draw for a lot of people who feel like they're getting shafted.

It's 'divide and conquer'. You separate people into groups. Then you make sure every group is in some way shorted. Then you watch them fight each other over the crumbs you scatter at them, and you can get away with murder. You can rape the treasury for billions while they fight over things like gay marriage, affirmative action, etc.

It's been done for millenia.

7. And once again we find...
neocons hiding behind the Constitution when it serves them, but ignoring the same document when it comes to their fearless leader's illegal and immoral administration.

Edited on Mon Nov-24-03 02:32 PM by Mentalist
some enterprising African-American should be ready with cash the moment this bake sale opens. Buy every item and turn around and have their own bake sale and turn a healthy profit.

But they will probably be too blinded by "outrage" to see the opportunity I just posted.

9. Phil Graham would be president of Texas A&M if Enron never got busted.....
Where his wife windy was in control of Kenny 'boy' Lay's purse strings. Texas A&M was wise enough to cancel out Phil baby. But what is indeed funny is what he said a few years back about the 'National Debt' ....Phil and Windy both belong behind bars along with Kenny Lay.

" "I taught economics for 12 years at Texas A&M." Gramm said. "And I have been teaching the same subject in Congress for the past 14 years. And, believe me, Aggies are a lot smarter."

Read this short article and judge for yourself what kind of men are elected to the U.S. Senate.

10. they think they are ridiculing affirmative action
but they've inadvertently exposed the per capita wage differential by race and gender.

If a woman is paid only 75 cents on the dollar, then she should pay only 75 cents on the dollar.

12. A State that's unofficial motto is a threat
"Don't mess with Texas" is about as obnoxious a statement as one can make as a summation of the dominant ethic.

A lot of great spirits live in and have lived in Texas, and I admire them as much as I feel for them, but the overall spirit of the place is extremely irritating. From its inception, it was a country filled with individuals who largely did as they pleased: with settlement contingent upon converting to Catholicism, many had no intention of doing so. When tax laws changed and the government wanted them to free their slaves, they broke into open revolt. Ya never hear about that part though: much of the hubbub leading to the war of independence was SO THEY COULD KEEP THEIR SLAVES, which was something the Mexican Government was against.

16. Nice distortion of an anti-litter campaign.
Although, you are correct in the motivations of the Texas Revolutionaries. They'd have been happy as clams being Mexican citizens had not the Mexicans changed their constitution in 1824.

13. funny.
I read about this a while back. I think it was done at some other university thought.

Supposidly there were some violent protests against this and the cops broke it up or something.

In the end they only made like $1.50 and sold only 3 cookies.

From that info we can infer that either 1 white person bought a cookie and 2 blacks bought one, or that 3 hispanics bought the cookies.

Personally had I been there I would have bought 2 cookies for a dollar and laughed at the whole thing.

17. so...
am i supposed to be offended that a cookie only costs me .75 and will cost a white guy $1.00. Hell, no. I would go to the ATM, withdraw about $30 and find all the Hispanics and African-Americans I could and send them to buy all the cookies. I would get the milk and we could have a party.

20. This is what college is all about
Let them have their fun.

It's a pretty good idea, and it makes their point.

If people can't do this kind of activism in college, when will they ever be able to do it?

Let the Democratic group come up with their own ideas, and hope everyone makes their points and has a good time. I sure did when I was in college.
