A Post-Debate Truce

For those I have rubbed the wrong way as of late, I am formally apologizing for my occasionally brash and (here's a word I have always liked) ornery behavior as of late. I am guilty of being a passionate political junkie, and being firm with my convictions. A lifelong contrarian, I have a knee-jerk tendency to dissent against the prevailing ways of looking at issues and solutions. But through all of that, I am a progressive and pacifist who is basically on the same side as the rest of you, most of the time. I would much rather be in this fight against the Bush regime with you, instead of being just a jester in the balcony. I'd much prefer saving my best zings for the chimpanzee slinging his mess all over our Oval Office.

Still, a debate is not just what many of us watched or discussed today, a debate is the very essence of democracy and the very values we wish to recapture in American life. The very values that are anathema to the occupants of the White House. I will still disagree and dissent, but on a level more commiserate with these high ideals, rather than the easy path of cheap shots and off-the-cuff missives. As always, I will be fair and give credit where it is due.

After watching the debate, I can't say I have changed my views on the candidates very much, although I will say ALL of them said something resonant and valid here and there, and none will receive my scorn as a result. Something can, and should, be said about all of them that was commendable.

Take or leave it, but this is my olive branch. I value peace above all, from globally to right down to this forum, person to person.

Peace, and a Democratic Party victory in 2004!

I like your Will Rogers quote. My late grandfather was 10 years old when he met Rogers, back in 1925. Rogers was making an appearance in Wyoming, where my grandfather lived, and when he got off the plane, he shook the hands of my grandfather and his best friend. He said "Hello, boys!", and then he was off to do whatever it was he came for. I like knowing I am only 2 degrees from Will Rogers, my second favorite Okie after Woody Guthrie. :-)

On a similar note, my mom, bro-in-law and 7 year old nephew were in New Orleans airport when bro saw Willie Nelson. He pointed him out to my mom and nephew as "a great man", Willie noticed, came over, and introduced himself. They talked for 20 minutes and mom said he was the nicest man she ever met (and she could smell bullshit at 50 paces).

What your post makes me think of is that we really don't like seeing our guys beat up on each other.
We should all be on the same team.

So, if we don't like them bashing each other, it would reason that we don't like seeing DUers doing it to ourselves either.

I've done a little stomping and threatening myself, although I can see something worthwhile in every candidate.
And I still have my favorite. We just have to get through this and stick together or we all lose big time.
