Ken Lucas, who backed Clooney's candidacy in his retirement announcement. Lucas called Clooney "a fresh face on the political scene who is intelligent, articulate, highly respected, and above all, passionate."
Clooney, a former Cincinnati television news anchorman who currently writes a thrice-weekly column for the Cincinnati Post, has never run for public office. He will be taking a leave of absence from the newspaper, a Post editor said.
I will tell you what I believe to be the truth, whether you agree with me or not, whether it is politically correct or not, whether an election hinges on it or not," Clooney said in a statement announcing he and his wife, Nina, will tour the district to get acquainted with voters.
Lucas had pledged to retire after three terms and said he was stepping aside as an act of conscience. He said he would have run for re-election if an acceptable candidate had not emerged.
This seems like a marquee race that I think we can pull off. We need to try and keep Lucas's seat, and Clooney running will help us do this.
